Position Description
-
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking one (1) undergraduate or graduate-level intern for the Stormwater in the Schools program. This role will support work within Seattle’s formal education system to engage K–12 students on topics such as salmon, stormwater, and pollution prevention behaviors. The intern will contribute to curriculum development, webpage content, and information accessibility while gaining hands-on experience in environmental education and community engagement.
Learning Objectives
The position is part of SPU’s Drainage & Wastewater Pollution Prevention Community Engagement team, which works to advance equity, environmental stewardship, and public awareness.- Gain experience developing plain language and accessible web content.
- Become familiar with knowledge organization for salmon- and stormwater-focused lessons for K–12 students.
- Gain experience with and understanding of urban drainage and wastewater systems and urban watersheds.
- Collaborate with a broad group of City/SPU staff, educators, and community stakeholders.
There is currently one (1) internship opportunity available at the undergraduate or graduate level. We require an one (1) year commitment for this internship.
The duration of this internship can last up to 24 months from start date or graduation, whichever comes first.

Job Responsibilities

- Develop accessible webpages and engagement content for teachers, students, and the public.[YR1]
- Support creation and organization of age-appropriate learning resources, including lesson plans and curricula aligned with Washington State learning standards.
- Assist with Stormwater in the Schools field program logistics
– Salmon in the Schools
– Creek-O-System
– Duwamish River Experience programs. - Contribute to program outreach and information accessibility for diverse audiences.

Qualifications

Education
Must be currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate-level coursework, pursuing a degree related to Education, Communications, Urban Planning, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Social Psychology, Public Policy, Indigenous Studies, Technical Writing, UX/UI, Web Design, Data or a related field.
- Undergraduate students must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA; graduate students a 3.0 GPA.
Students do not need to be enrolled over the summer months but will need to provide at the end of Spring Quarter/Semester proof of continuing and pre-registration for the Fall session as applicable.

- Passion for working with youth.
- Interest in environmental education and salmon/stormwater pollution issues.
- Ability to distill complex information into plain language for diverse audiences.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
- Experience in content organization, accessibility, or user design.
- Commitment to equity and environmental justice.
Working Environment
- Work may be performed in occasional outdoor settings which includes inclement weather conditions.

Additional Information

Hours
- During school year: 15–20 hours per week, scheduled to complement class schedules.
- During breaks/summer: hours may be worked between 32 – 40 hours per week. Work hours are generally between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Optional, Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
- Work location: Seattle Municipal Tower. Hybrid work flexibility may be available.
Undergraduate interns: $21.78 – $21.78 per hour
Graduate interns: $26.71 -$26.71 per hour
