Position Details

Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIPP in partnership with Hot Springs National Park are seeking an intern who will help increase visitor natural and cultural resource understanding of the park through educational programs and improving the park’s digital presence.

Intern activity 1:

Essential functions and responsibilities

  • Implements seasonal projects focused on exotic vegetation monitoring and control.
  • Assists with implementation of existing volunteer programs, and coordinates with their supervisor on one or more volunteer projects that relate to exotic plant monitoring and control.
  • Map non-native plant species for baseline data and ongoing evaluation of invasive populations Trainings that you will provide the intern for this activity
  • GIS/GPS Training
  • Working/training with the park’s biological science technician
  • Experience and training working with volunteers Potential environmental / human risk involved with this activity
  • Uneven terrain
  • Hiking off-trail
  • Working outside

Intern activity 2:

  • Intern will assist hydrologic technician to calibrate, maintain, and use multiparameter meters for the measurement of temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, and acid neutralizing capacity at 35 hot springs.
  • Aiding in visitor outreach and education about the geothermal hydrology of the hot springs and the life forms that call them home Assisting the Natural Resource Program Manager by creating reports, interpretive programs, and digital and printed educational materials to inform park management decisions and expand visitor understanding and satisfaction.
  • Trainings that you will provide the intern for this activity Working and training with the park’s hydrologic technician.
  • Natural Resource Program Manager will provide overview and training pertaining to the park’s thermal water program.
  • Attend various trainings, webinars, and web courses pertaining to natural resource management.
  • Potential Environmental / human risk involved with this activity Working outside Dehydration/nutrition Uneven Terrain.

Intern activity 3: 

  • Assistance with other projects in natural or cultural resource management such as wildlife surveys, social media, and archival research.
  • Cross Train with other divisions and assist with special events and efforts Trainings that you will provide the intern for this activity Natural Resource Program Manager will provide overview and training pertaining to the park’s natural resource management program.
  • Attend various trainings, webinars, and web courses pertaining to natural resource management. Potential Environmental / human risk involved with this activity Working outside Ticks, flies, chiggers, etc Uneven Terrain.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Mapping, inventory, and removal of invasive vegetation from the park’s trails and roadsides
  • Assisting with the thermal water monitoring program
  • Working with youth volunteers on trail work
  • Invasive plant management and special events
  • Creating new curriculum-based lesson plans
  • Completion of training and mentorship sessions

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum Age of 18
  • S. Citizen or Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Make a full 16-week commitment
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Ability to think creatively and critically
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be working towards a college-level degree in the physical or life sciences or a closely related field (geology, biology, natural resource management) from an accredited institution.
  • Coursework in biology, environmental science, hydrology, geology, geography, policy/regulations, and/or research methods is desired.
