Position Description

The Seattle Department of Transportation’s (SDOT) Project Development Division delivers bicycle and community projects and is seeking a graduate student to support the bicycle master plan implementation plan with data analysis and provide graphic support for outreach materials; bicycle project design packages; and maps.  We also need this position to help support the neighborhood street fund 2022-2024 project selection and design process with outreach material creation and distribution, data entry and analysis, and community engagement. The intern will assist with the urban trails and bikeways program on bike spot improvement project deliveries, and the annual trails checkup.

Educational Benefit to the Student
The intern will learn skills in bicycle and pedestrian project planning including but not limited to data collection and analysis and outreach. The intern will be a key participant in project team meetings.  The intern will receive training regarding common city practices including the race and social justice best practices. Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to take advantage of the City’s training opportunities.

Job Responsibilities

Bicycle Master Plan Intern
35%  Project Development. This position will provide support in developing bicycle and community
projects including working on the Complete Streets Checklist, map development and participating in
team meetings

25%  Field Work. This position will go out into the field to do observations of how people are using
our bicycle facilities, review road conditions. Additionally, they will support our annual trail spot
check to review trails for improvements

25%  Outreach/Materials Development – The position will support outreach for our projects including helping develop materials to advertise projects as well as to go out to community events to talk to the public about our work

15%   Data Collection and Analysis. Intern will conduct field observations to collect project related
data like pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular movement as well as parking studies. The intern will also
enter and compile data in to graphs and reports

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
Education 
Open to all graduate students enrolled in an accredited educational program. 

Preferred Areas of Study:   Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration
Graduate students will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.

EXPERIENCE
 
Required:

  • Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills
  • Competency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Attention to detail
  • Independent self-starter and ability to work well in a team

Desired Qualifications:

  • Basic GIS skills
  • InDesign skills
  • Basic understanding of planning principals
Additional Information

Start/End Dates:  July 2021 – June 2022

Schedule:  Intern will work 20 hours/weeks while school is in session.  40 hours/week during school breaks.  Work hours can be scheduled between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm.  May work weekends and evenings.
 
Salary:
Graduate students will be paid $22.50/hour
