Position Overview

The restoration and stewardship intern will support FOSC’s restoration and water quality programs. Internship duties will include leading and supporting habitat restoration workdays, helping with the Native Plant Nursery tasks and workdays, and assisting with the water quality program. The intern will lead school groups and community members on volunteer workdays in urban and wild areas of the Sausal Creek Watershed. Additional duties include assisting with water quality data collection, entry, and analysis as well as entering data from restoration workdays, and assisting with report writing. Training will be provided on restoration and water quality monitoring activities and methods.

All work is outside and COVID-19 protocols will be in place (volunteer groups under 10; socially distanced interactions and mask requirement).

Terms and Schedule

This is a temporary position, without benefits. The term of the internship: May 2021 to October 30, 2021. End date can be negotiated. It is also possible that an extension will be possible (June 2022). The rate of pay is $18.00 an hour. The number of hours required is 15-20 per week, with a flexible schedule. Candidate must be available to work some weekdays, and two Saturdays each month (determined by the selected candidate and FOSC staff). The intern will be responsible for their own transportation as well as helping to transport tools and other materials to worksites. Workers’ Compensation Insurance is provided. Successful completion of a background check, proof of negative TB results, and proof of personal auto insurance are required. Travel to and from work sites and work-related meetings is not reimbursable.

Desired Knowledge and Skills

  • Completion of at least one year of undergraduate education
  • Love of the outdoors and curiosity about ecological restoration; knowledge of ecology and plant communities in the Bay Area a plus
  • Experience facilitating groups and/or leading outdoor environmental activities in urban and/or wild areas
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental and social justice issues
  • Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds
  • Enjoy speaking and working with members of the public
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus
  • Excited to take initiative

The intern should have the ability to:

  • Help plan for, lead, and manage volunteers/students in restoration and nursery projects
  • Help plan for and lead workdays with youth, including gathering materials; educating participants on the organization, the watershed, the worksite, and tool safety; leading educational activities; restoration or nursery projects
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; internship relies heavily upon email communication
  • Lift up to 30 pounds
  • Use word processing, database, and spreadsheet software; Salesforce experience is a plus
