Summary

The King County Executive’s Office of Performance, Strategy, and Budget (PSB) is hiring three (3) summer interns to work with several different teams within the office.
Interns will gain a firsthand understanding of the branches of government and how they interact with each other, get an overview of how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented, understand why civic engagement matters, and build an appreciation for the importance of public service in its many forms from elected officials, to staff, to stakeholders, to clients, and the economy/environment. Please note that each internship is posted individually.

ABOUT THE OFFICE

The Office of Performance, Strategy and Budget (PSB) is in the Executive department of King County government. It serves as a resource to the County’s departments and agencies in developing and implementing budgets, strategic plans, business plans, financial plans, visual management tools, continuous improvement processes, and performance metrics. It is also responsible for regional planning and implementation of Lean process improvement. INTERNSHIP THREE

King County is seeking a thoughtful and intellectually curious student intern (completion of two (2) years or more higher education studies) to provide analytical and financial consulting in support of King County agencies and the Executive Office. The Physical Environment Intern will join the Budget Team in the Office of Performance, Strategy and Budget (PSB) and report to the Capital Budget Process Manager.  The Budget Team is a group of about 25 analysts and managers who have a unique role supporting agencies, advising decision-makers, and coordinating a budget process where technical analysis, public policy, and politics meet.  More specifically, this position will be part of the Physical Environment team, which provides policy and budget support to Metro Transit, the Department of Natural Resources and Parks, and the Department of Local Services.

Job Duties

The intern’s body of work will include some of the following items: 

  • Supporting capital budget process improvements.
  • Providing project management and drafting support for a fiscal sustainability study that King County Council has requested for the unincorporated area of King County.
  • Researching capital budget practices in other jurisdictions and identifying best practices to help support process improvements at King County.
  • Supporting day-to-day work in connection with Executive Analyst duties for the Surface Water Management program and Roads Division.
  • Providing support to the Budget Team, as needed, including crosschecking and editing fiscal analysis, memos, budget proposals, legislation, and more.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Pursuing a degree in public policy/administration, finance, economics, business, or a related field in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to innovate, embrace data, and solve problems.
  • Experience with PowerBI or other data reporting/visualization tools desired, but not required.
  • Talent for working with partners and stakeholders to address issues collaboratively.
  • Commitment to support the goal in King County’s Equity and Social Justice Strategic Plan of, “full and equal access to opportunities, power and resources so all people may achieve their full potential.”

Note: we will be considering both undergraduate and graduate student candidates for this opportunity. Undergraduate candidates must have at least two years of higher education completed

WORK SCHEDULE FOR ALL INTERNSHIPS:  The work schedule will be Monday-Friday. The workweek will consist of a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 40 hours (see each internship description for specific hours). These internships will last from early June to mid-August, although the position may begin later or end later depending on project and scheduling needs.

At this time, all internships will be virtual via online tools such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
