San Mateo County Parks system consists of 22 parks, historic sites, and regional trails. The properties have a wide variety of habitats, species, and visitor use.

The Natural Resource Management Program is focused on protecting and enhancing all natural resources within the park system. This includes habitat restoration, vegetation and invasive species management, native and invasive species mapping, wildlife monitoring, and volunteer stewardship activities.

The intern would report to Coyote Point Recreation Area or Redwood City, but will need to report to other park locations for a variety of events and work activities.

Examples Of Duties

A Natural Resource Management Intern II would be responsible for:

• Assisting with and co-leading volunteer habitat restoration stewardship activities and events, including event set-up and clean-up.
• Establishing and identifying new locations for future volunteer sites, including landscape reconnaissance, native plant and weed mapping, and weed management using manual, mechanical, and chemical control methods.
• Conducting other high-priority habitat enhancement and data collection activities throughout the park system, including the collection of work performed spatial data, the implementation of revegetation and weed suppression experiments and wildlife monitoring.
• Managing and organizing data, including conducting quality assessment and quality control of work performed data, electronically sorting and filing landscape, vegetation, and wildlife photos, and recording occurrences of natural resource management tasks in an electronic archive.
• Coordination with other Natural Resource Management, Volunteer Coordinator, and Interpretive staff.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to learn new skills, ability to follow directions, a good attitude, effective communication skills, ability to work in a team, strong organization skills, and a high attention to detail when conducting field tasks and recording and entering data. The candidate will have the ability to work full days outdoors in all weather conditions and variable terrain. Exposure to inclement weather, poison oak, and biting or stinging insects is anticipated. This position requires driving to different park locations, pulling a trailer, using County Radios, and manual labor including handling power-driven tools. This position will also involve herbicide application under the supervision of a licensed applicator.

This is a full-time position that will require the Natural Resource Management Intern II to work the following hours*:
Tuesday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Saturday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

*Hours are subject to change depending on timing constraints for specific work tasks.

Qualifications

• Current students with at least one year of college level education in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Biological Sciences, or related fields. Recent graduates are also welcome to apply.
• 1-2 years’ experience in related work in lieu of education will be considered.
• General knowledge of plants, and ability to learn and identify plant species
• Interest and enthusiasm for the environment.
• CPR/First Aid certified (may be able to attend parks training).
• Must have a valid California Driver’s License.

*Please note that there are no housing facilities for interns. You are responsible for your own housing and meals.
