ABOUT THE POSITION: The WSDA Food Safety & Consumer Services Laboratories Program provides laboratory testing for regulatory agencies and the agriculture communities to protect public health. The Laboratory tests Food, Feed, Dairy and environmental samples for surveillance and regulatory purposes. Funding for the Laboratory is from the General Funds-State, one local Fund, and one federal Cooperative Agreement.

This Administrative Intern 2 position supports the mission of the program by serving as an assistant in a variety of the basic laboratory functions, the laboratory Quality System, and the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This position is designed to provide college students, or recent college graduates, with indoctrination into employment with the state of Washington. Incumbents will receive training in departmental procedures and time will be assigned productive tasks and assignments in a microbiology area.

Duties
  • Assist in basic laboratory support in the decontamination room and media room by: autoclaves and sterilizes lab materials, cleans glassware and utensils, mops floors, cleans and disinfects equipment, remove trash and recycling, prepare media, reagents and solutions for testing.
  • Assists in a variety of sample collection, sample check-in, sample set-up, testing, data entry and analysis, QA/QC support or research tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Desired:

  • Successful completion of at least four semesters or six quarters of clinical, chemical, or public health related coursework at an accredited college or university.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Valid WA State Driver’s License
