Salary- $2,610.00 – $3,480.00 Monthly

Exempt, Full-time to Part-time (minimum 16 hours and up to 40 hours/week) Flexible start date with a 3-6 month duration.

Sophomore and under: $15/hour
Junior: $16/hour
Senior: $17/hour
Graduate students: up to $20/hour

Are you a full time college student wanting to gain practical hands-on experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology within a natural resources management setting? The Forest Resources Division (Forest Informatics Section) at the Washington State Department of Natural Resources is hiring a paid intern position to assist GIS staff with several projects involving:

  • Design/construction of a riparian leave/harvest area assessment QAQC GIS database and report.
  • Development of mobile data collection application and performing in-field testing/data collection.
  • Development/refinement of predictive spatial-statistical models involving hydrology and forest typing/productivity.

Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will have experience with GIS functions such as basic digitizing/editing, cartography, geoprocessing, and field data collection using ESRI products. This could include familiarity with ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, mobile GIS collection with Collector, Survey123 and/or FieldMaps. Some experience with Python scripting and/or building geoprocessing workflows with ModelBuilder is a plus but not required. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • A full-time student (12+ credits/quarter) majoring in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Natural Resource Management, Remote Sensing, Forestry, Environmental Science, Geology, Computer Science, or related or related field and will be returning to school in a following quarter/semester. OR a graduate student. Candidates who are not majoring in one of the specified degrees and who have demonstrated course work in GIS (2+ classes) are encouraged to apply. 
  • Physically able to work alone or as part of a team in undeveloped, remote or back-county landscapes and terrain in all weather conditions.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • At least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
