FISH & WILDLIFE OFFICER APPRENTICE/INTERN 

 

Multiple Locations Statewide: 
Mill Creek, Olympia/Tumwater, Spokane & Yakima 

 

Anticipated Appointment Length: Four Months
June 1st, 2021 – October 1st, 2021 

 

The mission of the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) Law Enforcement Program is to protect our natural resources and the public we serve.

 

Come join our team and promote public education concerning outdoor safety and conservation, wildlife resources, and programs offered throughout the department! 

 

Through this experience, you will gain an understanding of the Enforcement Program’s role within the WDFW organization and how it intersects with other WDFW programs.

Picture yourself gaining exposure to inter-jurisdictional police activities while assisting Fish & Wildlife Officers in a variety of general labor duties including stocking vehicles for patrol.

 

This is an opportunity to be responsible for helping Fish & Wildlife Officers to accomplish the daily and overall mission of the Law Enforcement Program.

Duties

 

Under the supervision of a Captain, with direction from a Sergeant, or Officer, our Fish & Wildlife Officer Apprentice/Intern,

 

  • Performs general labor, cleans various equipment, vehicles, and products.
  • Takes inventory of and tracks the use of supplies.
  • Stocks vehicles for patrol.
  • Has basic exposure with marine and/or land patrols.
  • Assists Fish & Wildlife Enforcement Officers with compliance checks.
  • Files and assists with documentation.
  • Sets up/takes down equipment.
  • Prepares a variety of equipment for patrols and ensure equipment is stored in a clean, serviceable, and ready-for-patrol condition.
  • Assists with maintenance of WDFW property or operations, including manual labor.
  • Attends agency meetings and training sessions.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Work is performed in an outdoor environment – it includes working in inclement weather conditions and hazardous work environments.   
    2. May be required to work in a difficult environment with adversarial situations.  
  • Schedule: 
    1. Candidates are expected to work the same schedule as the direct supervisor – this may include weekend work.
    2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
  • Travel Requirements:   
    1. May include statewide travel when necessary.
  • Tools and Equipment:   
    1. Office duties require use of standard office furniture and equipment.
  • Customer Interactions:          
    1. Interacts with Fish & Wildlife Officers and non-commissioned enforcement staff.  
    2. Headquarters and regional staff from other WDFW programs, local, state, tribal and federal law-enforcement entities, and state citizens.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma/GED Graduate.

AND 

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.

AND

  • Must have a valid Driver’s License. 

 

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 

  • Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Show a willingness to learn and follow directions.
  • Willing and able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Show initiative and ask plenty of questions.
  • Be dependable.
  • Able to travel statewide when necessary.
