Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has an internship opportunity for either a 2-4 year or graduate level student to learn and support the Environmental Justice and Service Equity (EJSE) Division staff in achieving its business objectives, service equity goals and SPU’s Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI) work plan objectives.
The student will work to support SPU in realizing the City of Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI) goals through internally-focused efforts managed by the Environmental Justice and Service Equity (EJSE) Division including: staff survey administration and data analysis (including Women and Minority-owned Business Enterprise “WMBE” data); SPU customer and program qualitative and quantitative evaluation and analysis; application of GIS to SPU customer-driven data; participation in racial equity toolkit and contractor selection processes; participation in SPU-wide and line of business-specific team meetings; developing and editing of employee newsletters (WMBE and Branch Equity Teams) and web articles; documentation of lesson learned; and support in developing yearend Community Connections report and organizing and tracking ongoing community connections data.
The projected start date for the internship is mid-January 2021. This internship is for up to 18 months or graduation, whichever comes first.
Hourly rates:
- Undergraduate – $17.84/hour
- Graduate – $21.87/hour

- Gain knowledge and experience developing and applying racial equity framework and tools;
- Gain experience in researching best practices and analyzing data;
- Gain experience working for a government entity;
- Develop continuous learning and skill building on issues related to institutional racism and other forms of oppression
- Learn and gain experience in racial, service and economic equity.

Under close to moderate supervision, the intern will assist with:
- Research and development of equity tools, related training modules, and resources (i.e., demographics, planning tools, WMBE data, GIS maps, outreach, engagement, and evaluation resources)
- Data entry, analysis, and reports (e.g. WMBE analytics);
- Providing logistical support of SPU Race and Social Justice related activities and technical assistance to SPU staff and others on current and new polices, projects and programs with a race and social justice lens
- Identifying and delivering training and other learning/sharing activities that increase service equity at SPU (i.e., tipping point, race: the power of an illusion, cultural competence and public engagement, etc.)
- Creating and editing communication tools (reports, web site, share point, video, newsletter, etc.) to inform others of EJSE work.
Due to the continuing development with Covid, the successful candidate will work remotely until local public health officials allow for the safe return to the workplace. Therefore, access to internet is required.Qualifications
Education: Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate-level student pursuing a degree in Social Work, Community Development, Urban Planning, Environmental Design or Planning, Statistics, Business or Public Administration, or other related fields study.
Undergraduate student must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. Graduate student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Student must be enrolled on either a part-time or full-time basis for the duration of the internship.
Exception: Student is not required to be enrolled during the summer session(s) but must provide documentation of continued fall enrollment.
Licensing: Valid Washington State driver’s license is required.
Additional Information
Hours: During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (15-20 hours per week). The internship opportunity may permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. Work is normally between the hours of 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday – Friday.
