The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) seeks interns to lead the fight for protecting Wilderness-quality public lands in Utah. This will be a remote internship, you do not need to live in Utah.

The goals for the internship are:

  • Organize amongst your local community (digital and/or in-person) to build the “Redrock Nation” in your state.
  • Recruit 25 volunteers for 3 or more creative/inventive actions or events.
  • Hold in-district meetings (either in person or via Zoom, depending on COVID) with their members of Congress and Senators (3 meetings total) with at least 5 additional attendees on the topic of America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act.

These goals are subject to change, and depend on the targets/legislative needs.

SUWA is committed to providing an equitable work environment and all internship opportunities are open to any and all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, marital status, military or veteran status, or any other characteristic. If you are asking yourself if you should apply, the answer is YES! Please do!

Timeline and HoursThis internship is a 15 week program. The Fall Cohort will be from August 16 to November 19, 2021. Interns are expected to work approximately 8 hours per week. For interns who are students enrolled in courses during the internship, accommodations can be made for academic commitments such as tests, mid-terms, and finals, as well as class schedules.

Stipend and Equipment: Interns will be paid $1500 for the entirety of the internship in monthly installments. This equates to approximately $12.50/hour. Interns will need to provide their own computer with internet access and webcam for meetings. SUWA will provide other necessary equipment and software for completing the internship, as well as an “@SUWA.org” email and Google Drive account for the intern to use for the duration of the internship.

Expectations: **DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THIS INTERNSHIP WILL BE COMPLETELY REMOTE THROUGH 2021.** Interns will be expected to attend a weekly meeting on Mondays at 2:00pm MT for check-ins with SUWA staff, training, and cohort discussions. This date & time is subject to change. A weekly schedule will be provided, listing discussion topics. Interns outside Utah will also have a Zoom meeting with the regional SUWA organizer once every 2 weeks or as needed to ensure alignment with SUWA organizing goals and expectations.

What we are looking for in an intern:

  • Dedication to environmental activism and protecting the natural environment not only for recreation or preservation, but to advocate for justice for the ancestral lands of Indigenous peoples throughout the region.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and concisely is essential.
  • Knowledge of government and/or public land issues is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Must be comfortable speaking to groups of people in person or online.
  • Ability to think creatively and to multi-task.

Please submit resume and cover letter describing why natural landscapes are important to you and what would make you the best candidate for this internship to Travis Hammill at travis@suwa.org by August 1st.
