BIOLOGY INTERNSHIPS

 

The Department of Fish & Wildlife is Offering: 
Two (2) Part-Time, Paid Biology Internships – Includes Remote Work 

Anticipated Internship Dates: 3 Months 
June 16th, 2021 – September 30th, 2021

The Capital and Asset Management Program within the Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking to fill two (2) Biology Internship positions. Start and end dates are flexible to coincide with school schedules, as needed. This internship can be used to fulfill credits for graduation, if requested.  

The Capital and Asset Management Program (CAMP) is responsible for managing the agency’s Capital Budget and associated projects – this position will be primarily focused on capital projects that have an “in-water work” requirement.

Duties

Some of what you will learn to do,

  • Assist lead permitting staff in fish removals and sampling work areas.
  • Seining, sampling, and, removal of aquatic species from active construction areas.
  • Cataloging and maintaining accurate records.
  • Environmental sampling in support of maintaining good water quality and site conditions.
  • Water quality sampling including pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen, or other site samples.
  • Administrative tasks, including but not limited to paper filing, minor vehicle maintenance, equipment storage, cleaning, and inventory.
  • Assist project permitting staff in acquiring necessary environmental permits to perform project(s).
  • Assist in filling out permit forms and delivery and pick-up to and from appropriate regulatory agencies and environmental labs.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards     
    1. Work is performed at various field locations throughout Washington State and includes working on active construction sites including around heavy equipment.
    2. Work is also performed under adverse environmental conditions, in the water and includes carrying 40 pounds on uneven and/or muddy terrain.
  • Schedule:
    1. Work is non-scheduled, as needed, and on-call – variable hours ranging from 0 to 40 hours per week.
    2. Alternative work schedules including overnight stays are likely.
    3. There may be an opportunity for remote work, as approved by supervisor.
  • Travel Requirements:    
    1. This position requires substantial field time and travel throughout Washington State, long field days and some overnight stays are likely.
  • Tools and Equipment:             
    1. Pickup trucks, standard laboratory equipment including water quality probes and turbidity kits.
    2. Recording accurate and legible field notes by hand or digital devices, and digital cameras which includes downloading photos/videos to computer.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Interacting with the public while accessing work areas, must be professional.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Any of the following are encouraged to apply:

Those who have a High School diploma or GED and are currently a college student (enrolled and pursuing a degree at an accredited college or university).

Those who have graduated within the last six (6) months, majoring in Biology, environmental studies, or a natural resource related degree.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

          AND 

  • Must be able to safely operate a pick-up truck.

Special Requirements: 

  • As work is often done with heavy construction equipment present, adhering to safety protocol and general directions is paramount.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow general laboratory and field safety procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Highly motivated.
  • At least four semesters or six quarters work at an accredited college or university.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office package including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Pursuing a degree in natural resource management, fisheries, biology, or a similar discipline.
