PART-TIME/PAID INTERNSHIP 

 

LANDS & FOREST HEALTH ARCHAEOLOGIST INTERN 

Have you recently completed or are you currently undergoing course work in History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resource Management, Archaeology, Anthropology or Social Sciences?  

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is Offering:
One (1) Part-Time, Paid Internship – Includes Remote Work 

Anticipated Internship Dates: 
May 15th, 2021 – May 15th, 2022  

This is an exciting opportunity to showcase your skills and apply your classroom/natural resource training to real world scenarios. 

The Lands and Forest Health Archaeologist Internship provides the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the practical application of historic preservation and cultural resource management in an on-the-job environment all while gleaning valuable knowledge from the WDFW Team!

Duties

Some of what you will learn to do, 

  • Assist Lands and Forest Health Archaeologists in documenting cultural resources.
  • Perform research and field documentation for historic property inventory forms, and historic archaeological site inventory forms.
  • Perform cultural resource surveys and cultural resource monitoring.
  • Write cultural resource reports.
  • Evaluate historic built-environment resources by applying National Park Service criteria.
  • Assist archaeologists in acquiring necessary cultural clearances to perform project(s).
  • Assist in writing consultation letters for appropriate regulatory agencies and consulting parties.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Field work is performed at various locations throughout Washington State – this includes active construction sites, working around large equipment and working on active hatchery sites.
    2. Field work entails working in adverse environmental conditions, working in/around water, and carrying up to 40 pounds on uneven terrain.
    3. Teleworking/remote options may be available.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Variable hours ranging from 0 to 40 hours per week.
    2. Typically, Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
    3. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
  • Travel Requirements:   
    1. Substantial field work and travel throughout Washington State is required.
    2. Long field days and some overnight stays are likely.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Pickup trucks, standard office equipment, GPS units, cameras, and hand tools for digging.
    2. Operating a digital camera including downloading images to a computer.
  • Customer Interactions:          
    1. Interact with WDFW Staff and the public while accessing work areas.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Any of the following are encouraged to apply:

Those who have three (3) months of volunteer/employment experience in natural or cultural resource work (with a letter of recommendation from a supervisor or Tribal Historic Preservation Officer).

Undergraduate students or graduate students who are considering a career change and have relevant personal or professional experience.

Those undergoing study or who have recently completed an academic program that emphasized coursework in History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resource Management, Archaeology, Anthropology, Social Science, or a related degree.

Military Officers or enlisted personnel interested in pursuing a civilian career in History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resource Management, Archaeology, Anthropology, or Social Sciences after the military.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Interested in pursuing a degree and/or career in cultural resource management, historic preservation, history, archaeology, or a similar discipline.
