Join something GREAT and make a difference!
Are you someone who loves the outdoors and is passionate about becoming a natural resource professional working for Washington State? If you appreciate a remote natural environment, enjoy assisting the public, and want to build practical forestry and natural resource management skills while working as part of a small team, then this is the job for you.
The successful candidate will assist a team of natural resource professionals who design timber sales for Baker District, in the Northwest Region. Work may include assisting with timber sale boundary traversing, collecting plot data, and applying the department’s Habitat Conservation Plan, Policy for Sustainable Forests, and applicable Forest Practices Rules into timber sale designs. This will include buffering streams, marking trees for retention, and providing assistance with forest road layout. Other opportunities may include exposure to active timber harvest operations with contract compliance staff, collecting silviculture plot data for seedling survival, and assessing vegetation management needs. If you enjoy forestry challenges and watching your work come to fruition, this is the place for you!
The position will have a duty station in Sedro Woolley, WA. The varied terrain and microclimates in Baker District provide many timber sale design challenges from steep terrain needing adequate logging system evaluations, unstable slopes that require identification, protection, and mitigation of impacts from harvesting, complex and unique habitats that are managed and/or protected under the agency’s Habitat Conservation Plan, and timber harvest and silvicultural prescriptions that are developed for variable retention harvests, variable density thinnings, and small-wood commercial thinnings. Sedro Woolley is a growing community where logging and high tech come together, maintaining a robust economy and high quality of life. Bellingham is less than an hour away and Seattle is less than two hours away. Have the best of both worlds by enjoying the outdoors near the Salish Sea and the Cascade Mountains, while having all the options of larger cities close by.
This internship is a great way to get an introduction to both the Department of Natural Resources and working in a professional natural resource field. You will be supported, mentored, and coached to have the best possible summer intern experience possible, with a wide variety of learning opportunities. Additionally, working as an intern enables both you and the DNR staff to build professional relationships that will help as you advance in your education and future career. -
