*DNR provides housing in some locations or a $500/month housing stipend if free housing is not available.

Spend your summer with a team that is passionate about recreation. This unique educational opportunity is located within the recreation program of Baker District and Clear Lake District in DNR’s Northwest Region. Recreation managers and staff at DNR carry out management activities such as trail and trail infrastructure assessments and repairs, maintenance of day-use areas and facilities, oversight of Washington Conservation Corps crews and other contract trail crews, and the supervision of and outreach to user groups and volunteers to accomplish the region’s goal of a fun and safe user experience in a beautiful area.

This internship will provide hands-on experience and provide an opportunity to work with professional recreation managers as well as foresters, engineers, and biologists on lands managed as working forests that generate revenue through timber harvesting while still allowing for recreational use by the general public.  Baker District, in Northwest Region has two primary designated recreation areas.  These are Blanchard State Forest and the Harry Osborne Forest, both in Skagit County and both with trails, trailheads and camping areas.  Other DNR managed landscapes in Baker District offer dispersed recreation.  Clear Lake District manages Walker Valley ORV area in Skagit County.  The internship will provide valuable experiences in recreational management principles and an understanding of Washington Department of Natural Resources core mission, history and objectives. Your days will be spent working on existing trails, trailheads, campgrounds, and day-use areas. There may be the opportunity to assist with the building of new trails and there will be the chance to attend meetings with user group committees as well as public events that highlight recreation on DNR managed land.

Responsibilities: 

  • Conducting trail assessments, including documentation, and assist with trail construction, reconstruction and maintenance projects.
  • Assist in the development of outreach messages about DNR lands for the public and develop and install signage.
  • Assist the district’s recreation manager and trails steward with documents such as permits, environmental analyses and plans for various infrastructure projects.
  • Assisting with the coordination and supervision of Washington Conservation Corps crews on various work projects.
  • Conducting day-to-day maintenance of recreation areas and facilities.
  • Work with volunteers and user groups to make campgrounds, day-use areas and trails in the district a recreation destination that is safe, clean and fun
  • Interact with the public at recreation areas and provide them with recommendations, explain policies and rules, and be able to articulate agency goals and mission.

Required Qualifications: 

  • A full-time student (12+ credits/quarter) majoring in Natural Resources, Fish Ecology, Environmental Studies, Forest Science, Silviculture, or related field and will be returning to school in a quarter/semester following the internship.
  • Physically able to work alone or as part of a team in undeveloped, remote, forested back-county terrain in all weather conditions
  • A licensed driver with two years of driving experience. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
  • At least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
