Salary– $3,294.00 – $4,286.00 Monthly

Implement creel survey study designs, provide data management, project reporting, and analysis support. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure that study data collected adhere to probabilistic study design and standards of scientific integrity.
  • Performs surveys to assess angling effort, counting angler vehicles and trailers at multiple, pre-determine driver locations accessed by motor vehicle.
  • Provides feedback about sampling protocols, and accurately records data into iPad application and on scale card paper form.
  • Uses a knife to remove snouts from Chinook and Coho salmon with CWTs, which are used to assess stock specific impacts for fisheries modeling.
  • Samples salmon catch to obtain stock composition (DNA taken with scissors), age structure (scales taken with forceps), fish length (length taken by measuring device), and hatchery and natural-origin proportions (mark-status).
  • Contact anglers to conduct creel interviews, traveling by foot to contact bank anglers at river access points and monitoring boat ramps for groups of returning boat anglers.
  • During interviews ask pre-determined questions about an angler’s fishing experience (e.g., trip length, target species, and catch and/or harvest).
  • Prepares data summaries, data tables, charts, and figures for reports.

Leads, Directs and schedules Scientific Technician 2’s (ST2s) in the collection and compilation of creel data.  Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Schedules and assigns tasks on daily, weekly, and monthly basis depending on project deadlines-and environmental factors.
  • Coordinates creel data management tasks including data entry and data quality control procedures-and ensures they are accomplished on schedule – assists the database manager.
  • Performs routine audits of data to ensure data accuracy – corrects errors.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Counts and interviews anglers at a variety of popular sport fishing boat launch sites and access areas along the rivers – fieldwork is often done in inclement weather.
    2. Contacting anglers requires short hikes to fishing areas or driving to creel locations via state, federal, and county roads, as well as local travel along streams on roads throughout the district using a state vehicle.
  • Schedule: 
    1. Work hours are generally 40 hours per week, extra hours may be needed to meet agency goals – must work weekends and three weekdays.
    2. Workdays and hours may change due to weather and river conditions.
    3. A flexible hourly and daily work schedule is necessary to perform the assigned tasks including early mornings and late nights.
    4. Holidays may be included as potential workdays.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Considerable driving is required via state, federal, and county roads.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.).
    2. State vehicle, wading shoes or hip boots, rain gear sampling gear, notebooks, and vests.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. May interact with private landowners or public that may have negative opinions of governmental agencies and regulations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

          OR

  • Equivalent education/experience.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience: 

  • Port sampling and lake or river creel surveys.
  • As a crew lead or supervisor.
  • Managing data using Excel, Access, or other database management platforms.
  • Working with recreational anglers and guides.
  • Managing data using Excel, Access, or other database management platforms.
  • Managing, visualizing, and analyzing data using Program R.
  • Proficient with using iPads.
  • Working with recreational anglers and guides.
