What: Sierra Corps is a Forestry Fellowship program implemented by the Sierra Nevada Alliance that aims to increase workforce capacity for forest health restoration, biomass utilization, and wildfire resilience projects in the Sierra Nevada. The Alliance places Fellows with partners throughout the region for forest-health related employment. Fellows bring their education, skills, and expertise to engage in paid fellowships that provide assistance in assessment, planning, permitting, project management, and other essential forest restoration and wildfire resilience work. Location: The Fellowship positions will be located in the Sierra. We are currently hiring for one position based in Chico, CA and one position based in Mammoth Lakes or Bishop, CA.
Time Commitment: Full time, 40 hours/week from January/February – December 2021. All Fellows are required to commit to the full term of their Fellowship position. Paid holidays, accrued vacation and sick leave are also included in this time commitment.
Required Qualifications: Each Fellowship Position has unique requirements related to the position’s function and these will be included in the Host Site specific position descriptions when they become available. The Sierra Corps Program has the following general requirements:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the U.S.
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED (higher education degrees are strongly recommended)
- Must be a minimum of 18 years old and able to pass criminal background check
Desired Qualifications: The following are skills specific desired qualifications for all Sierra Corps Fellowship positions.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, or other related field OR at least 2 years of forestry vocational training and education
- At least 1 year of experience with forest health monitoring and assessment
- At least 2 years combined experience in:
- forest health monitoring and assessment
- conservation planning and project management
- environmental analysis and research
- grant writing
- stakeholder engagement and collaborative facilitation across diverse array of partners
- Knowledge of CEQA/NEPA regulations and documentation
- Strong desire to work in a forest health related career, ideally in the Sierra
- Passion for conservation of the Sierra
The Chico position requires that candidates that have experience leading field crews and operating chainsaws for forest restoration purposes.
The Mammoth position requires that candidates have experience managing projects independently, working with diverse stakeholders, and experience with California and Sierra forest restoration principles.
Compensation:
- $16-19/hr with employer-provided Health Insurance
- Paid Holidays, accrued personal leave, and accrued vacation time.
- $1,500 training and education stipend to be used during the Fellowship term.
