WOHESC Social Justice, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement
The organizers of the Washington Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC) recognize the interconnection of environmental and social justice problems and the societal structures that cause them both. We know that sustainability efforts to date have often ignored the voices of certain stakeholders and built on existing inequalities. The WOHESC program aims to do better by presenting sustainability thoughts, research, and initiatives that focus on just and equitable economies, healthy and clean environments, and inclusive and fair societies. Furthermore, we are mindful of the fact that the most vulnerable and marginalized people will experience the worst effects of a changing climate, both globally and in the US. We assert that creating a more just and equitable world is fundamental to tackling sustainability issues. Accordingly, we strive to weave diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout conference thematic elements, speakers, and attendees in order to uplift the perspectives of those working at the intersections of social justice and environmentalism in order to create a more sustainable world for everyone.

It is important to us that our conference include equity and diversity across all groups including race, color, religion, national origin, political affiliation or belief, disability, age, gender identity, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, institution, or industry background. Practically speaking, this means that we prioritize diverse representation in our keynote, plenary, and panel presenters; design conference themes, tours, and panels that deepen conversations and uplift work related to social justice; and weigh each independent submission’s depth of engagement with justice and equity. Last, we adopt a willingness to be constantly learning and listening, knowing that we will be imperfect even as we work to tackle the urgent and overlapping crises of our time.
