Leadership training is one of the most important components of Wild Diversity’s mission. We want our community to have a sense of place in the outdoors, one where they can grow, share their experiences and thrive. We believe that representation matter when it comes to true diversity in the outdoors. Training leaders of diverse backgrounds is paramount for long-term diversity in the outdoors.   

Our adventure leaders play a big role in Wild Diversity’s engagement with our community. Their expertise guides participant through wild spaces and creates a container for them discover their own connection with the outdoors.    

We welcome future adventure leaders who are new to the outdoors as well as those with experience leading trips. We want people who love engaging with the community; those who are excited about sharing knowledge; and those who can foster welcoming space for our community.

2021 Training Program

Land Adventure Leader training is a 12 hours in classroom and a weekend two night immersion training that will help build skills to lead trips for Wild Diversity and the broader community. This is for folks who want to lead backpacks, hikes and camping trips. Leaders will also have access to Wilderness First Aid certificate training and Outdoor American Sign Language (ASL) course. *Both training options are pending as of 2/25.      

Water Adventure Leader training is everything that the Land Adventure Leader training includes with an additional 3 hours  of classroom training and separate weekend two night immersion training.  This is for folks who want to lead single and multi day canoe and kayak adventures. Leaders will learn equivalent to ACA Level 2.       

Adventure Leaders participating training will commit to lead 2 adventure in 2021 plus two additional workshop in-person, video or virtual- 4 events total.

2021 Training Goals

A prospective leader completing Wild Diversity’s Leadership Development Training will demonstrate the ability to:  

  • Assess and manage the risks involved in leading others in a backcountry setting.
  • Provide experiential education to support participants’ proficiency in a variety of outdoor skills.
  • Design and implement an outdoor adventures that allows other participants to develop a sense of discovery.
  • Understand our communities connection to the outdoors and how it relates to the our sense of place, health and sustainability.

Adventure Leader Requirements

Adventure Leaders will attend the Leadership Development Training (LDT) which will cover all the requirements for leading trips through our programs. The LDT is where Leaders will learn about Wild Diversity’s philosophy and how it plays a role in our programming and the adventures we lead. Each Adventure Leader will have an understanding of Wild Diversity’s processes and procedures, risk management practices, and how we are adapting in the time of a global pandemic. The LDT gives Leaders the opportunity to progress from leading and planning single day land and water trips to eventual multi day land and water trips.

Wild Diversity has a set of requirements of Adventure Leaders after the LDT in order for our leaders to connect with our community in multiple ways. Adventure Leaders are required to carry out 2 adventures and 1 -2 workshops (in person, video or virtual), and/or 1 -2 blog posts per season.
