Amherst College invites applications for the Director of Sustainability position. The Director of Sustainability is a full-time, year-round position, job group and level AD-1. The Center for Environment Sustainability (CES) mission is to facilitate academic and applied experiences for students in service of developing knowledge across disciplines to inform environmentally sustainable decisions and action. The CES supports faculty in their efforts to integrate sustainability into the curriculum and research. By leveraging the college’s sustainable operational practices, the CES creates experiential learning opportunities for students. The CES promotes institutional innovation and action in support of the college’s sustainability commitment. The CES recognizes the intersections of sustainability with social justice, environmental justice and strives to foster a more equitable world through its initiatives and programming.
The Director will lead the Amherst College Center of Environmental Sustainability by creating and supporting opportunities for a diverse group of students to engage in scholarship focused on a just and sustainable future, building collaborative relationships that enhance teaching and experiential learning, communicating and engaging the community in sustainability initiatives, and pushing the college forward in its efforts to transform to carbon neutrality. The Director works with campus constituents to develop the innovative programs and projects that ensure the College is a mindful environmental steward. The Director promotes and enables integration of sustainable values and practices into the curriculum and research, co-curricular experiential learning, the college’s strategic planning, management of resources and operations, facilities planning and design, and students’ residential experience.
The CES and its Director of Sustainability uses sustainability program initiatives to create knowledge, awareness and commitment to life-long responsible environmental citizenry.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field
- Minimum of seven years in implementing environmental or sustainability programs with preference for experience in a non-profit, corporate or educational setting.
- Leadership role in environmental initiatives and resource management with demonstrated experience in teaching preferred.
- Excellent time management and thorough attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to supporting and collaborating with a diverse community.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
Preferred:
- Master’s or other advanced degree preferred, e.g., M.A., M.S. or Ph.D. in Natural Resources, Environmental Policy or related field.
