Student Advisory Board, member position ($1000 stipend total over 2 payments, November-June or 8 months, 2-4 hours a month, remote)

UNIDE, a NSF funded Research Coordination Network (RCN) focused on Undergraduate Biology Education (UBE), is looking for 6-9 motivated, creative, and energetic undergraduate and graduate students in ecology and environmental science (EE) fields interested in participating in the Student Advisory Board (SAB) for the final year of the grant. Members of the SAB are crucial for providing valued student perspectives to the Steering Committee and expanding the UNIDE network. As members of the SAB, students will build skills in collaboration, peer-to-peer mentorship, academic professionalization, and project management. Students will be primarily mentored by Dr. Natasha Woods (Moravian University).

The SAB is a crucial dimension of UNIDE, which is a broad network of ecologists, educators, and social scientists dedicated to expanding ecology beyond its traditional priorities to include the experiences and interests of those who are most impacted by ecological change. Objectives of this network include

·       Identification of barriers and opportunities to expanding  the breadth ecology and environmental sciences (EE).

·       Dissemination of knowledge on barriers and opportunities for bringing people into the study and practice of EE.

·       Development of evidence-based pedagogical models that promote broad participation in EE.

·       Assessment of teaching interventions on efficacy for increasing broad participation in EE.

Projects Specifics: We seek undergraduate and graduate students to elevate the voices of students on all of the UNIDE objectives outlined above. A major gap in recruitment and retention approaches to increasing broad participation is that students already in EE fields are not treated as stakeholders let alone experts. Even in the context of a growing interest in student-centered approaches to pedagogy, many of these interventions fail to engage student voices in developing student-centered approaches. The SAB provides a unique infrastructure for students in EE-related fields to forge community, engage in outreach, and inform pedagogical interventions.

Expectations of the Student Advisory Board:  This is a remote position that pays $1000 for 4 hours on average per month for a total of 8 months of work (Nov 5 – June 5).
