The Department of Environment must maintain partnerships with community, territorial, provincial, national and international stakeholders utilizing state-of-the-art technology and information systems. At the same time, the organization is deeply committed to maintaining a workforce that is representative of the population and whose operations reflect the principles of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ).
The Biologist works with departmental staff, the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, Nunavut Planning Commission, and Nunavut Impact Review Board to ensure that all types of wildlife harvesting and other human activities that may affect wildlife or their habitat are conducted in a manner, which does not compromise the sustainability of the wildlife resource. The Biologist also advises other divisions on wildlife management theory, policies, and strategies.
The Biologist provides advice to ensure that wildlife and wildlife habitat use in Nunavut is ecologically sustainable and wildlife abundance and diversity is maintained; work as a team member within the Wildlife Research Division, develop partnerships with communities, co-management bodies, other government agencies, universities, industry, etc. to conduct wildlife and habitat research to ensure that wildlife management policies, advice and recommendation have a sound scientific basis; work within Wildlife Research Division on wildlife studies to ensure programs, objectives and techniques are technically compatible and comparable across Nunavut; provide ecological advice to other sections, outside agencies and users when requested on conservation, species status, environmental impact and management concerns; and administer and coordinate activities associated with management of studies being conducted to ensure that the objectives and requirements of the studies are being fulfilled.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology or related field, plus three (3) years of related experience, including, designing and conducting field research, data management and analysis, strong database and GIS skills, public consultation and publication of peer reviewed reports; a minimum of one (1) year supervisory or leading a team experience.
Experience in wilderness travel and survival skills is an asset.
First Aid & CPR certification is an asset.
WHMIS certification is an asset.
This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.

As this is a term position until 3 years from date of hire, current indeterminate Government of Nunavut employees may be offered a competitive transfer assignment for the duration of the term if they are deemed to be the successful candidate, however this is subject to managerial approval.
