Administrative Intern (Administrative Intern 3)
**This is a non-permanent role expected to last 120 hours or between three (3) – six (6) months. This role will also have the option of working in-office or remotely.**
 
 The Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) is a small state agency located in Olympia, Washington that plans for and provides funding to: create and maintain opportunities for recreation; protect the best of the state’s wild lands, farms, and forests; and recover salmon.

We Are Looking For:
We are seeking a motivated and passionate intern to join our team at the Washington Invasive Species Council (WISC), hosted by RCO. Established in 2006 by the Legislature, our council plays a pivotal role in providing policy-level direction and fostering communication among agencies and organizations dedicated to combating invasive species. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to crucial goals while gaining valuable experience in public outreach and engagement related to invasive species. Responsibilities include updating information on our mobile app and website, assisting in content development for public awareness materials, and engaging with natural resource professionals to showcase your achievements. Duties

The Work You Will Enjoy Doing Includes:

  • Learn about council’s priority species and selection process.
  • Research priority species and other species of concern for content updates.
  • Gain knowledge in taxonomy, biology, and Washington status of priority species.
  • Assist in updating invasive species info on mobile app by interacting with the software developers and communicating changes.
  • Make corresponding changes on the council’s website when possible.
  • Aid in content development for public awareness materials.
  • Participate in outreach campaigns and develop related materials.
  • Engage in professional development through interaction with natural resource professionals; culminating in a capstone presentation or project.
  • Other duties as needed.

 

 

Qualifications

What You Need To Qualify: 

  • Currently enrolled in an educational (such as associate’s, bachelor’s, or graduate) program in biological, environmental, or physical science, education, communications, or closely related field. 
  • Ability to synthesize and convey complex scientific content to a wide array of audiences, ranging from K-8 to adult reading level. Knowledge of proper grammatical construction; sentence and paragraph development. 
  • Ability to follow directions; comprehend complex directives and regulations; work with others; conduct research; speak effectively.
What We Desire: 
  • Familiarity with invasive species or noxious weeds and knowledge of impacts, prevention tactics, management, and lead organizations. 
  • Experience and comfort working in interorganizational roles, working directly with staff of tribal governments, state and local government agencies, non-governmental organizations and associations, and academic institutions. 
  • Experience developing and deploying social media content and using social media platforms such as Facebook, and Instagram. 
  • Advanced writing skills with the ability to communicate scientific or legal information into understandable, concise descriptions. 
  • Familiarity with WordPress websites and website content development. 
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills; ability to work proactively and independently. 
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe. 
  • Basic organizational knowledge of mission and goals of individual member agencies of the Washington Invasive Species Council and its overall statewide invasive species strategy.
Things To Consider Before Applying:
  • RCO is head-quartered in Olympia, WA on the state’s capital campus. RCO will consider candidates that can successfully do this job from another location (in-state) with occasional travel to Olympia for meetings and other functions.
  • RCO may hire only those who are legally authorized to work in the United States.
