Play a pivotal role in enhancing habitat quality, conserving native flora and fauna, and managing recreational activities as the Assistant Manager of Chelan Wildlife Area.

With a focus on weed control, planting native habitats, maintaining trails and recreation facilities, you’ll have the opportunity to make a significant impact on wildlife conservation.

Picture yourself, 

Supporting the manager of the Chelan Wildlife Area by directing staff in the office and in the field. 

In this dynamic role, 

Assist in the planning of restoration projects, developing relationships with neighbors, users, colleagues in WDFW and other organizations.

We are seeking a candidate,

Duties

 

Some of what our Assistant Wildlife Area Manager will enjoy doing, 

Administration and supervision: 

  • Plan, assign, and review the work of staff, adjusting assignments and schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels and respond to fluctuating workloads.
  • Evaluate employee performance and prepare performance appraisals.
  • Assess the training needs of staff and arrange for or provides instruction.
  • Review applicants’ credentials, conduct interviews, and hire or effectively recommend hiring staff.
  • Resolve staff issues, disciplines, and recognizes employees, and counsel employees in work-related activities and career development.

 

Monitor, enhance and manage habitat on wildlife area: 

  • Plan, perform, and/or assign habitat maintenance and enhancement activities.
  • Support and provide technical input for projects.
  • Implement Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) on wildlife areas, including compliance with applicable laws, label restrictions, and record keeping associated with chemical applications.
  • Perform adaptive management on habitat enhancement activities.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as tractors, mini-excavators, and farm implements.
  • Survey and monitor habitats, and native and invasive plant species.  

Recreation management:

  • Manage recreation opportunities and recommend improvements to supervisor. 

Perform field investigations:

  • Survey for emerging issues such as user conflicts, habitat damage, facility, and infrastructure condition.

Equipment, infrastructure and facility management and community involvement and outreach: 

  • Repair, maintain, and ensure the safety and proper working order of capital facilities, recreation developments, and equipment.
  • Identify deficiencies in facilities, infrastructure and equipment and recommend solutions.
  • Contribute to the development, updating, and implementing Wildlife Area Plans.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Field work 50% – conducted in various locations, in wetlands, upland shrubsteppe and forest habitats. Operate tractors, heavy equipment, pickups, all-terrain vehicles (ATV), utility terrain vehicles (UTV), towing trailers and herbicide application equipment. Transport equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds for up to a mile over uneven terrain. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. 
    • Office work 50% – Some flexibility in working from home for office work. Office work may include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into a computer and looking at a computer monitor for long periods of time.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Thursday, 7:00 A.M. – 5:30 P.M.
    • Depending on workload and season, incumbent may be required to work weekends and outside of the normal schedule.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Daily travel to field sites.  
    • Occasional travel (up to 10%) required for training or meetings.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Four (4)-wheel drive pickup, all-terrain vehicles (ATV), utility terrain vehicles (UTV), tractor, excavator, skid steer, trailers, rock rake, disc, sprayer, mower and hand power tools (such as drill, grinder, and saw).
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interact with the public while in the field and routine public response via phone and email. 
    • Works with county and other state agency workers occasionally. 
    • Deals with private businesses, large and small, during the purchase of materials. 
    • Work with volunteers, enforcement officers, district biologists, and other agency personnel.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science

AND 

  • One (1) year of professional experience in one (1) or more of the following: Habitat management or habitat research. Fish management or fish research. Wildlife management or wildlife research. 

OR 

  • Equivalent education/experience.

Please Note: 

  • Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
  • A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in the applicable science will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Washington State Pesticide Applicators License to be obtained within the six (6) months of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

Experience with:

  • Working on management and enhancement of shrubsteppe, riparian, wetland, and forest plant communities.
  • Operating motor vehicles, ATV’s, UTV’s, herbicide application equipment, and farm and construction equipment.
  • Heavy equipment and farm equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Computers and other communication technology.
  • ESRI ArcMap (GIS mapping systems) and GPS to gather information and generate maps.
  • Monitoring vegetation, wildlife populations and recreational use.
  • Integrated Pest management (noxious weed control, herbicide applications).

 

Knowledge of:

  • Methods and practices of land management; technical habitat processes; elements of habitat for wildlife and fish; wildlife habitat management techniques.
  • Wildlife habitat relationships.
  • Noxious weeds of north central Washington
  • Grant writing, technical writing, and public speaking.
  • Protection of cultural resources.
