WNPS Research & Plant Inventory

The Research and Inventory Committee solicits proposals that advance the mission of the Washington Native Plant Society, focusing on projects that extend our knowledge of the biology of native plant species or that inventory the flora of an understudied area within Washington State. Special consideration is given to research efforts of graduate students, first time recipients and underserved individuals or groups, to help develop the careers of botanists with interests in native plants.

The Grant Cycle for 2024 is open to receive applications January 1st, 2024.  The Research & Plant Inventory Committee will award up to $8,000 in grant awards for this cycle.  Funding is provided by the generous support from donors to the WNPS Endowment fund and the WNPS Board of Directors.

Grants:

Conservation – Education – Research

WNPS provides small grants annually to further the mission around the state in 3 categories.
Please review the committee description and grant criteria for each program carefully to determine the best fit for your project or program before applying.

The Washington Native Plant Society (WNPS) Conservation Committee is accepting grant applications for projects that will restore, improve, or support on-the-ground, native plant ecosystems in Washington.  Successful projects must provide public benefit and align with the WNPS Conservation Principles.

Proposals for grants up to $2000 will be considered. Partial funding may be offered at the discretion of WNPS. Funds are awarded based on our determination of which projects bring the most benefit to Washington’s native plants and native plant habitats. Preference may be given to students, first time recipient team projects, or chapters and organizations with limited financial resources. Underserved communities and geographic distribution will be considered.

Grant requests from WNPS members on behalf of WNPS chapters, organizations, or individual projects are eligible. Projects may be on public or private land.

Grant applications for 2024 will be accepted through midnight, March 1.  Award Responses will be sent by Apil 1st to celebrate Washington State’s Native Plant Appreciation Month.

The Conservation Committee Budget for 2024 Grant Cycle is $8,000. Thank you WNPS Endowment Fund Donors and WNPS State Board of Directors for your support of this program.

  • Quantity and quality of ecological benefit to be gained
  • Likelihood of long-term project success
  • Visit the WNPS Blog Story for more information – 2020 Conservation Grant Recipients

Preference may be given to students, first time recipient team projects, or chapters and organizations with limited financial resources.  If possible, grant awards will be distributed geographically across the state.

PLEASE NOTE: The grant payment for funded projects will be paid when the project is completed and a final report and all receipts are submitted.  The final report should be 300-500 words in length and include photo documentation suitable for publication.

The Education Committee encourages educators throughout our state to develop projects that educate students and the public about native plants and plant habitats. Grants are available to WNPS members for amounts between $500 and $2000 for education projects that further the goals of the Society. These grants are funded by WNPS member contributions to support academic/classroom projects or activities that encourage students to learn about Washington’s native flora, and public education projects linked to gardens, museums, parks and other public displays of or about native plants. Teachers who have been granted awards can serve as mentors for other teachers hoping to do similar projects in their school districts.

This is a competitive grant process. All education grant applications are reviewed carefully by the Education Committee and awarded based on consideration of factors such as the greatest educational benefits, geographical representation, and feasibility of project completion. Preference may be given to students, first time recipient team projects, or chapters and organizations with limited financial resources. The 2024 budget is $8000, which may be dispersed to fund between 4 and 8 grants depending on funding requests. Applications for 2024 grants are due on March 1, 2024.

Please contact the Education Committee at education@wnps.org if you have any questions.
