To allow for growth and salary progression the full salary range is: $95,050.00 – $116,696.00 Annually

This position Is the Assistant Division Manager for the Conservation Section, which includes Natural Areas, Natural Heritage, and Conservation Acquisitions programs, including supervisory responsibilities. This includes setting statewide priorities for the programs, working with legislators, stakeholders, regions, and others to implement those priorities, and following applicable plans such as the agency strategic plan, Natural Heritage plan, and Natural Areas plans. Further responsibilities include providing guidance and support for the management of the statewide natural areas system and inventory, classification, and distribution of data regarding rare plants and animals and native ecosystems for the entire state. This position also represents DNR on the Natural Heritage Advisory Council, providing leadership support to the council, and is responsible for managing a successful working relationship with the council. The employee in this position also plays an integral part in a larger team of managers who work collaboratively with each other to ensure the Recreation and Conservation Division meets its objectives while maintaining the agency’s commitment to sustainability, sound science, and transparency.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
Some of the duties and tasks for this position include:

  • Providing leadership in setting conservation priorities for the Conservation statewide. Shares responsibility with the Natural Heritage Program Manager and with the Natural Areas Program Manager for completion of the State of Washington Natural Heritage Plan. This document sets forth the priorities for Identifying potential additions to the statewide system of natural areas.
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for the Conservation Programs, and sometimes for the Department of Natural Resources, with other agencies and organizations regarding conservation Issues.
  • Supervising natural areas and natural heritage program managers.
  • Preparing and allotting the Natural Heritage/Areas Programs budgets including identifying budget needs to support the program’s work, developing program performance measures, preparing budget concept papers and other documents for legislative appropriation requests, and developing program allotment information for the Finance Division.
  • Monitoring program expenditures to maintain work plan and spending goals including completing variance reports and ensuring that budget deliverables are met for the program.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 2 years of experience managing a conservation or recreation program, at a statewide level in the previous 5 years.
  • 2 years of experience managing stakeholder relationships in Washington with a statewide footprint that operate exclusively in conservation and/or recreation in the previous 5 years.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • The assigned duty station Is the Natural Resources Building In Olympia; the majority of the time (85-90%) will be spent indoors. The building environment consists of a cubicle workstation with a computer In an open area. 
  • 10-15% including overnight travel for site visits, public meetings, or other programmatic needs.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
