Mission

The mission of the Forestry Branch is to “provide good stewardship of the forested training lands of JBLM by ensuring the continued existence of a healthy forest that supports military training, sustains native plants and animals, and benefits local communities.” JBLM has 61,000 acres of forest, woodland, and savanna, most of which are actively managed for military training and for commercial and non-commercial uses.  Forest management activities are carried out by on-site professional foresters and technicians. These activities include forest improvement, reforestation, forest protection, and maintenance of forest access roads.

 

Duties

  • Performs stand examinations of forested areas, gathering data for forest inventory and monitoring.
  • Relocates and re-measures permanent forest inventory plots and establishes and measures temporary point samples plots.
  • Identifies forest types and conditions of stand characteristics and composition.
  • Estimates both gross and net volume using a variety of software, tables, and techniques.
  • Assists in controlled burning to reduce fire hazards, ecological restoration, and vegetation management.
  • Assist with vegetation control using herbicide and mechanical methods.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain a valid State issued driver’s license.
  • This position requires a pre-employment and yearly post-employment physical.
  • Mandatory overtime is required.
  • This position requires applicant and incumbent to pass an arduous physical fitness test which includes a Pack Test (3 miles in 45 minutes with a 45 pound pack)

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. 


Specialized Experience: GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes:1) Assisting with selective tree marking and timber volume estimation; or 2) Assisting with wildland fire management programs such as prescribed burns and fire suppression. 3) Assisting with herbicide application under the guidance of DoD certified applications. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Forestry, Silviculture, Botany, Taxonomy, Ecology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
