Thurston County Public Health and Social Services is recruiting for an Education and Outreach Specialist I for our Environmental Health Division.
 
Public Health and Social Services (PHSS) is Thurston County’s local health jurisdiction and human services department and is responsible for protecting the health and promoting the well-being of all people who live, work, and play in Thurston County. As an Education and Outreach Specialist I, you will work with our education team to plan and deliver education, outreach, and behavior change programs focused on creating healthy homes and yards and protecting water quality.
 
Some of the essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Conduct education presentations, workshops, and “train the trainer” sessions to a wide variety of audiences on a variety of environmental health topics.
  • Staff education booths at community fairs and events.
  • Analyze and interpret technical information and assist in developing new programs to accomplish outreach goals.
  • Use social marketing and behavior change theory to develop specific strategies to identify and effectively reach target groups.
  • Develop, review, update, and revise informational and educational materials.
  • May oversee graphic design and production of materials.
  • Develop multi-media campaigns targeted toward appropriate audiences.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of program materials and methods and makes suggestions for modification.
  • Collaboratively work as a team member and with community partners to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Coordinate activities and efforts to maximize program success in the community.
  • Gather and track program-supporting data and other information.
  • Analyze program effectiveness and identify methods to improve programs.
  • Conduct research and identify emerging and changing issues impacting program and make recommendations to management for improvements.
  • Perform other work as required or assigned, including, but not limited to, a 24/7 response during public health emergency situations and disease outbreak investigations.
The ideal candidate has the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:  
  • Experience using community-based social marketing techniques to create effective behavior change programs promoting actions to improve or protect environmental health.
  • Knowledge about household hazardous products and methods to reduce exposure, safely store, and properly dispose of unwanted products.
  • Ability to create and sustain collaborative working relationships with community partners.
  • Knowledge and skills in Healthy Homes practices.
  • Experience with audience assessment and program evaluation.

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, public health, environmental health, environmental science, or other closely related field. Additional experience can be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must have three years experience working in public health, environmental issues, or other related field promoting education, outreach, media campaign, public relations or other comparable experiences to successfully perform duties and responsibilities of the classification.
  • Must have the ability to utilize a personal computer with related software to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Current Washington State Driver’s License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
  • A professional certification applicable to area of assignment is highly desired (examples: Pesticide Applicator, Public Health Educator Certification, Hazardous Waste Health and Safety training, etc.).
