Position Description
The Nursery Manager leads a variety of programs within the SER-UW Native Plant Nursery, such as native plant production, our education internship, and plant sales. The Nursery Manager will perform native plant research, manage volunteers, lead public outreach campaigns, and perform administrative tasks. The Nursery Manager will create strategies to enhance nursery efficiency, sustainability, and inclusivity. This position is in partnership with the Washington Campus Compact and will require AmeriCorps enrollment.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Guide native plant propagation, production, and research
  • Perform plant care including watering, weeding, pruning, and up-potting, and integrated pest management tasks
  • Recruiting and supervising student volunteers, interns, and an hourly nursery assistant
  • Ensuring that nursery meets obligations for grow contracts and other plant production opportunities that may arise.
  • Development and/or delivery of native plant classes
  • Participate fully in lab meetings and professional development opportunities
  • Exploring ways to improve nursery logistics
  • Exploring potential linkages with other nurseries in the region and with various audiences that might be interested in using native plants

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Passion for botany/horticulture/ecological restoration
  • Western Washington native plant identification skills
  • Nursery or greenhouse experience
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills
  • Experience with employee supervision and volunteer management
  • Experience with environmental education (formal or informal)
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather

 

Position Schedule
The Nursery Manager is expected to be available full-time during regular nursery hours, Monday through Friday between 8 am and 5 pm. Occasional evening and weekend shifts may be necessary. Work schedule is flexible and eligible for partial remote work.

  • $12,500 living stipend distributed over service period
  • Education Award of $3,447.50 upon successful completion of 900 hour service term
  • A maximum of 20% of the total number of hours in your service term may be spent on training and professional development
  • AmeriCorps members may be eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits through the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS)
  • Experience with the professional field of horticulture/botany
