Are you working toward a career in agriculture, and love being on the land?  The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for someone to assist with agricultural lease inspections in the field for the summer of 2024.  To be successful in this position you will need a basic understanding of agriculture and an interest in learning DNR’s business as a landowner in Central and Eastern Washington.

The DNR Agriculture Program produces $24 million in annual revenue for the state trusts. This revenue, generated from the 1.1 million acres of state trust lands that DNR leases for agriculture and grazing helps fund public school construction across Washington state. We work with lessees to ensure that the lands are productive and sustainably managed while public resources such as water, fish, and wildlife are protected.

This intern will work alongside DNR’s team of Land Managers to gain knowledge and experience in our management of agricultural trust lands and our land leasing processes. Working with the Agriculture Program Manager, the Intern will ensure timely and accurate reporting of lessee compliance through our field inspection process.



 

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Traveling and inspecting irrigated, dryland, and grazing leases
  • Assisting Land Managers with lease documents
  • Weed identification and control
  • Standard photo monitoring methods
  • Rangeland plant identification
  • Forage measurement, utilization, mapping and aerial photo interpretations
  • Coordinated Resource Management Plans (CRM’s) and trends of range conditions
  • Utilizing ArcPro GIS
  • Promoting positive impactful use of state trust lands
  • Understand and apply laws and regulations.
  • Assist with managing field projects – Riparian grazing management


 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

The Olympic Region of Washington DNR is seeking a summer intern who is eager to get out in the woods and be immersed in all things forestry on the Olympic peninsula. This position will provide invaluable experience in the many disciplines within forestry; timber sale layout, contract administration, road engineering, GIS, wildlife, hydrology, geology, and cultural resources. You will be in the field daily working with foresters, engineers, specialists, and loggers helping facilitate the sale and harvest of wood products from State Trust Lands. This position will be working in the forests near Port Angeles, Washington.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
Assist foresters and engineers with the following:

  • Timber sale layout and design
  • Planning and designing forest roads
  • Locating and classifying streams and wetlands following appropriate Habitat Conservation Plan or forest practices requirements utilizing field observations, LiDAR, and consultation with biologist and/or Forest Regulation forester
  • Collecting data for timber sale boundaries, streams, wetlands, leave trees, roads, etc. utilizing GPS
  • Scheduling and meeting with specialists regarding fish streams, wetlands, wildlife, unstable slopes, and cultural and historic resources.
  • Fostering good working relations with the community and adjacent landowners by being transparent about DNR operations.
  • Completing necessary permitting and paperwork utilizing applicable software and knowledge of standards, rules and regulations to create a timber sale document packet that complies with all procedures, policies, and state and federal regulations

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for a water resources intern for the summer of 2024. The program is involved in all aspects of the agency, including agriculture, which generates revenue for the state trusts. This revenue helps fund public school construction across Washington State.

This intern will work alongside DNR’s Water Resource team to gain knowledge and experience in management of the extensive water rights portfolio. Working with the Water Resources team, the intern will work on identifying and updating critical information pertaining to DNR’s water rights, the impacts to those water rights based on climate change and research and review of existing water rights and claims.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with database support and updating for DNR’s water rights. Work includes records scanning and research on water rights using a variety of sources.
  • Helping develop a tracking system for all DNR water rights that require metering. Compliance on reporting.  
  • Assisting with any field work that may be required, including searching for wells and metering support.
  • Tracking current water rights prices/values to keep DNR’s information up to date.
  • Updating GIS layers with up-to-date data.
  • Assisting water resource staff with leasing program support and compliance.

Required Qualifications:

  • A full-time student (12+ credits/quarter) majoring in Natural Resources Management, Geology, Geography, Computer Science, Environmental Sciences or related field that will be returning to school in a following quarter/semester OR Graduate student.
  • Must be at least 18 at the time of hire.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:

  • Daily traveling to project locations should be expected as fieldwork is a regular expectation of this position. Overnight travel is limited but may be required if a project is in a remote location or if a learning opportunity includes visiting another region.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Physically able to work alone or as part of a team in undeveloped, remote, forested or back-county landscapes and terrain in all weather conditions.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of water rights and Washington state water law.
  • Knowledge of irrigation practices and agriculture.
  • Knowledge of hydrogeology and/or water resources management.
  • Practical experience in database design as relates to natural resources.
  • Data organization and critical thinking skills.
  • Database and basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe.
  • Basic written and oral communication skills.
  • Candidates should have work or recreational experience driving on unimproved (dirt or gravel) roads.
