This unique position will work on select projects in the DNR Southeast Region Natural Areas Program. The Southeast Region Natural Areas Program is responsible for managing over 15,000 acres across 16 sites that support rare and sensitive plant species, animals, and high-quality native ecosystems.  This intern will assist with ecological restoration projects, invasive species control, data collection and public outreach. These duties will be performed primarily under the direct supervision of Natural Areas Staff.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
The internship program is designed to give students educational and hands-on field experience in a variety of duties that will include:

  • Various restoration activities such as planting, seeding, native seed collection
  • Invasive species control
  • Inventory and mapping of invasive species, rare plants and infrastructure
  • Public outreach to visitors at DNR Natural Areas (trailhead counts, user surveys)
  • Assist with developing public outreach materials     
  • Create maps using ArcGIS program and data management

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A full-time student (12+ credits/quarter) majoring in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or related field that will be returning to school in a following quarter/semester OR Graduate student.

This unique educational opportunity is located in the Product Sales Program of DNR’s Pacific Cascade Region. Foresters at DNR carry out land management activities such as timber sale design; reforestation; and road layout, construction and maintenance. This internship will provide hands-on experience in these activities and provide an opportunity to work with professional Foresters, Engineers, and Biologists as well as exposure to other disciplines that ensure appropriate management activities are conducted responsibly. Pacific Cascade Region is composed of 450,000 acres of DNR-managed Trust Lands that produce revenue for the trust beneficiaries. The internship will provide valuable experiences in forest management principles and an understanding of the WA Dept. of Natural Resources’ core mission, history and objectives.

Want to learn about reforestation in Washington? The Washington Department of Natural Resources is looking for a Seed Orchard Intern. Seed orchards are blocks of trees, similar to fruit orchards, that are managed to produce seed that is sent to our nursery to grow tree seedlings. This internship will provide the chance to work alongside orchard managers and testing foresters as we evaluate seed sources and work in seed orchards at different stages of development. In this role, you will learn about horticultural skills and tree biology as well as get practical experience with agricultural equipment like tractors and irrigation systems. While our main facility is in the Olympia area, we also manage sites around the state, so you’ll get to travel and see different forest types.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:

Work alongside seed orchard staff to accomplish the following:
•    Prepare genetic test sites for planting
•    Inventory seed orchard sites to plan for thinning
•    Monitor cone crops
•    Work with contractors to accomplish orchard thinning and cone harvest projects

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A full-time student (12+ credits/quarter) majoring in Natural Resources Management, Geology, Geography, Computer Science, Environmental Sciences or related field and will be returning to school in the following quarter/semester.
  • Physically able to work alone or as part of a team in undeveloped, remote, forested or back-county landscapes and terrain in all weather conditions.
  • A licensed driver with two years of driving experience. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
