The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) seeks to hire a nearshore ecologist to perform kelp and seagrass research within the Nearshore Habitat Program. The positions will conduct field surveys of kelp and eelgrass using a variety of methods, including collecting UAS footage and deploying sensors to collect environmental data.  This position is ideal for an ecologist who wants to monitor kelp and eelgrass in a small workgroup environment, with tasks that span data collection, processing, analyses, and results presentation. This position will challenge you to balance waves and currents on Puget Sound and data management and dissemination in the office. Your diligence in fieldwork preparation and open communication with staff will be critical for smooth and safe field operations and to successfully achieve project objectives. Innovation and creative analysis skills are needed to interpret naturally dynamic data. Strong interpersonal skills will be needed to collaborate with diverse partners. Excellent verbal and written skills will be needed to communicate with diverse audiences

Duties

Responsibilities:
The position performs ecological research under the administrative supervision of a Natural Resource Scientist 3. Principle responsibilities include the independent development of defined research projects, field surveys, and analyses relating to kelp and seagrass monitoring. The position also assists with other nearshore vegetation studies and restoration projects in the field and laboratory.

The nearshore ecologist position will independently plan, conduct, and report on research projects related to kelp monitoring, using a variety of methods including small watercraft and/or remote sensing. Tasks will include field-based data collection and sample processing, data management, analysis, and presentation of results. Field-related tasks include the development of schedules and float plans, boat operation, flying a UAS, and scientific equipment management. Office-related project tasks include securing permits for projects, managing environmental instruments using specialized software, and data management/analysis, including spatial analysis in ArcGIS Pro, statistical analysis in R, and general tasks in MS Office Suite. The positions write reports in agency publications and present results in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific meetings and conferences.

The position will assist with research related to eelgrass stressor projects, including the evaluation of seagrass distribution, sediment conditions, and water quality parameters. Field-related tasks include the development of field schedules and float plans, boat operation, scientific equipment management, and oversight of staff. Office-related project tasks include: managing environmental instruments using specialized software, and data management/analysis, including spatial analysis in ArcGIS Pro, statistical analysis in R, and general tasks in MS Office Suite. This ecologist position will write reports in agency publications and present results in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific meetings and conferences.

The position will participate in the field and office on other eelgrass and kelp research projects. The position will consult with management and stakeholders to determine research needs and disseminate data.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in marine/estuarine sciences or closely related field and 3 years of related professional research and restoration experience.
    OR Equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and public records retention and requests are followed.
  • Proficiency with UAS surveys and the processing of aerial imagery.
  • Ability to develop and implement research design and methods for aquatic field and laboratory projects.
  • Ability to develop field plans and operate vehicles and small research vessels.
  • Knowledge of the statistical analysis of data and communication of scientific findings in written and oral formats.
  • Knowledge of scientific literature related to seagrass and kelp ecology, trends, and stressors.
  • Knowledge of identifying and distinguishing marine vegetation found in Puget Sound, especially seagrass and kelp.
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, such as ArcGIS.
  • Knowledge of statistical software, in particular R.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • The position is located primarily in the office, with regular boat- or land-based fieldwork. Position requires the ability to conduct fieldwork on uneven terrain and on a boat in all weather conditions in Puget Sound.
  • Up to 7 consecutive days in travel status is expected, approximately 6-10 times per year. The position entails field work and occasional travel for meetings, typically in western Washington. Fieldwork is conducted by boat, van, or on foot.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 
  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate or the ability to acquire such a license within 4 months after being hired in the position.
Desired Qualifications:
  • A Master’s Degree in marine/estuarine science or ecology or closely related field and 3 years of related professional research and restoration experience.
  • Familiarity with environmental monitoring equipment, particularly water quality sensors.
  • Experience in the collection and preparation of specimens to perform laboratory analysis.
  • Knowledge of marine and estuarine waters of the Pacific Northwest, especially areas within Puget Sound.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulatory framework for nearshore habitat, especially DNR’s aquatic resource management responsibilities.
