Do you see yourself leading a team of 9 wildland firefighters across Washington’s most diverse geographic region, including one full time IA equipment operator? The Washington State Department of Natural Resources is looking for a bright, quick-thinking individual to fill the role of the Yakima Assistant Fire Management Officer. This position is perfect for those that enjoy hazard-risk mitigation, collaborating with interagency peers, and using professional judgment to determine necessary resources during high to extreme fire danger levels.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
This position assists in providing leadership and oversight of the fire program in Yakima County for the Washington Department of Natural Resources.  You will have the responsibility of hiring, training, and providing daily leadership to both permanent and seasonal firefighters.  

Major Job Duties Include:

  • Supervising and leading 1 Dozer Operator, 2 engine module leaders and 6 engine seasonal firefighters
  • Recruiting and building a strong, cohesive team that can work together in extreme fire environments
  • Establishing Unified Command when an incident occurs within unit
  • Determine safe and effective strategy and tactics during all phases of wildfire management based on available resources and expected conditions, all while providing for the safety of personnel and the public
  • May be asked to serve as the Agency Representative for Southeast Region
  • Building and maintaining cooperating agency partnerships
  • Ensuring staff, resources, equipment and facilities are available for incidents
  • Implementing fire prevention and fire education activities within the community
  • Interacting with the public and promoting the DNR Mission
  • Building a positive rapport with private landowners
  • Serve as a unit duty officer on a rotating basis

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Certified as a NWCG Single Resource Boss
  • Certified NWCG Incident Commander Type 5 or higher or the ability to obtain during the probationary period
  • Supervisory Experience

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Must possess an NWCG Single Resource Boss qualification
  • Must possess or have the ability to achieve during probationary period NWCG Incident Commander Type 5 qualification.
  • Must pass work capacity test annually at the arduous level required by current red card qualifications.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Position’s assigned duty station is the Naches Work Center. Work is performed in an office setting (30%) and alone in isolated unimproved natural areas within the unit (70%).  Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Position requires travel (50%) to the field for project work, fires, or supervision, attend meetings or various trainings. Frequent overnight travel is required for trainings, meetings, and fire assignments.
Desired Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or Associates Degree in Fire Science, Natural Resource Management or a closely related field.
  • Task Force Leader (or higher) NWCG qualifications.
  • Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2)
  • Commitment to continual learning and adaption to technology advances.
  • Skills in evaluating others’ abilities, and assessing training needs.
  • Facilitative skills to work with groups of people to solve issues.
