The Washington State Department of Natural Resources is looking for a skilled, quick-thinking individual to fill the role of the Wildland Fire Heavy Equipment Operator in the Blue Mt Firer Unit. This position is perfect for those who enjoy hazard-risk mitigation, suppression with heavy equipment, working in a dynamic team environment or working alone, and using professional judgment to determine line construction tactics during high to extreme fire danger levels.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide for skilled and safe operation of heavy equipment owned or leased by the WADNR including transports, dozers, excavators, tenders, engines, masticating equipment, and other miscellaneous equipment. This position provides operation of heavy equipment in response to wildland fire emergency incidents, serves as fire line overhead as qualified, and supports forest resiliency and fire hazard mitigation projects in Asotin, Garfield, Columbia, and Walla Walla Counties for the Washington Department of Natural Resources.

  • Operating heavy equipment (owned or leased by DNR) during fire suppression/repair activities, hazardous fuels mitigation, prescribed fire, and forest health improvement projects.
  • Helping build a strong, cohesive team that can work together in extreme fire environments.
  • Attend, Provide, or assist in the training of heavy equipment use, operation, limitations, and maintenance.
  • Determine safe and effective strategies and tactics during all phases of wildfire. management based on available resources and expected conditions, all while providing for the safety of personnel and the public.
  • Building and maintaining cooperating agency partnerships.
  • Ensuring equipment is ready and available for incidents.
  • Help with implementing fire prevention and fire education activities within the community.
  • Interacting with the public and promoting the DNR Mission.
  • Building a positive rapport with private landowners.
  • Other duties might include participating in region committees, ordering and facilities maintenance, as well as responding to complaints.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Two years minimum experience in operating dozers or excavators in a forested environment.
  • Two years minimum of documented experience operating Class A CDL-rated transport equipment including lowboy trailers, tilt bed trailers, tilt bed transport trucks, etc. Employee must possess a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tank vehicle endorsement to be able to drive equipment.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • The position’s assigned duty station is the Clarkston work center. The majority (85%) of work is in the field on wildfires or forest resiliency projects, requiring the ability to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions. The position must be able to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Day travel between wildfires, forest resiliency assignments, and work centers is frequent. Overnight travel for training and meetings may be required one to three times per year.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states where they have held a license for the past three years.
  • Pre-employment CDL verification, work history background check, and drug testing will be required as a condition of employment. This position may be subject to pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspicion drug testing.
  • Must complete and pass IS-700 and ICS-100 courses.
  • Successful completion of Operator Safety Training including knowledge of standard fire orders, situations that shout watch out, and LCES.
  • Must pass the work capacity test at the level required for all NWCG-qualified positions. At a minimum, must be able to pass the moderate work capacity test.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Fully qualified in multiple NWCG Single Resource Boss positions and ICT4 and maintain that level of certification.
  • Proven ability in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, mobile navigation applications, and Global Positioning technology.
  • Equipment Operating Experience:
    • Three years minimum documented experience in operating dozers in a forested environment with wildland fire experience.
    • Three years of documented experience operating excavators, skid steers, and wood processing equipment in a forested environment.
    • Three years minimum of documented experience operating Class A CDL-rated transport equipment including lowboy trailers, tilt bed trailers, tilt bed transport trucks, etc.
    • PM-310-1 rated Heavy Equipment Boss (HEQB)
  • Knowledge and/or experience of:
    • Burn permit regulations
    • Fire regulatory and enforcement
    • Forest fire prevention
    • Fire investigation
    • Good writing and verbal communication skills
    • General forestry
    • Successful completion of S-236
