The DNR is responsible for regulating forestry activities on both private and state-owned public lands in Washington State. This includes regulating timber harvests, building or repairing forest roads or culverts, thinning forests, and many other forest practices. In order to monitor these activities in DNR’s expansive Southeast Region, the Forest Practices Coordinator (FPPC) supervises one Natural Resources Technician and is responsible for the office processing of forest practices applications, and staff support.

The FPPC will be leading a team that has a lot of knowledge and experience. The FPPC provides support to all team members within the forest practices program in the Southeast region and assists the District Manager in reviewing legislative policies and laws and giving recommendations.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Leading and supervising the Forest Practices Office in the Southeast Region, which consists of the FPPC and 1 Natural Resource Technician 3.
  • Develop and foster collaborative partnerships with diverse internal and external stakeholders to find creative and innovative solutions.
  • Serve as region lead on correspondence, public disclosure requests, and coordination of enforcement actions.
  • Coordinates internal and external dissemination of information to include timber, fish, and wildlife parties.
  • Providing feedback on policy as it affects regulating and protecting state and private forest land in the region and statewide.
  • Effective and positive communication.
  • Working to resolve sensitive resource issues with a variety of partners.
  • Field review and make approval/conditioning decisions on forest practices applications (FPAs) and compliance with forest practices activities.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Computer skills involving managing office data and corresponding to multiple customers including staff, landowners, agencies, and Tribes.
  • Associate degree in Forestry or similar Natural Resources degree
    OR two years of experience as a Natural Resources Specialist 2 in a Forestry Field
    OR three years of paraprofessional experience in regulatory programs involving Forestry.
  • Working knowledge of the 2001 Forest Practices Rules and Forest Practices Board Manual.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • The position’s assigned duty station is the region headquarters in Ellensburg. Work is performed in an office setting (50%). The other 50% consists of fieldwork, which is performed in isolated, unimproved natural areas. Incumbent must be able to traverse steep, uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Requires 50% travel time between forest practice sites when completing field duties. Occasional overnight travel will be necessary to accomplish these tasks when business needs arise and for attendance of trainings, coordination of off-site meetings, etc.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 
Desired Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in forestry or related natural resources area and three years of professional experience working with regulatory programs in the forestry sector.
  • Experience implementing Washington’s Forest and Fish Rules.
  • Experience implementing rules as a DNR Forest Practices Forester.
  • Experience analyzing complex documents for compliance with rules/laws.
  • Supervisory Experience.
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating public meetings.
