The goals for managing statewide recreation are to
  • promote the safety of the public, DNR employees, and volunteers,
  • support enjoyable recreation that is compatible with land management responsibilities,
  • work in collaboration with volunteers and interested stakeholders to provide engaging recreational opportunities, and
  • manage healthy natural landscapes and working forests that can sustain recreation for current and future generations.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, issuance of warnings and citations for violations of recreation laws and regulations; educating the general public, neighbors, and recreational users about recreational opportunities, appropriate recreational behavior, and recreational rules and regulations; and investigating and addressing unauthorized recreational activities. This position leads the recreation trail and facility signage program across the unit, including replacement and reinstallation of new signage, recommending, ordering, and installing additional or improved signs.

This position will require a combination of skilled technical and professional work to accomplish the objectives of the position.

This position is a member of the District recreation team who all work together to make recreation safe, enjoyable and sustainable.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Enforcement, public contacts, education, user safety, investigation and incident reporting.
  • Enforce compliance with the agency’s recreation and public access rules protecting resources, managing public behavior and user safety.
  • Train, direct and evaluate volunteers regarding education and enforcement issues.  
  • Partner with user groups to supplement existing volunteer education programs throughout the landscape.
  • Assist with the design, maintenance, and new installation of regulatory and educational signage on DNR-managed land.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • One year of professional or technical outdoor recreation-related experience focused on user education and outreach.
  • Ability to communicate agency goals, policies and laws in a clear and concise manner.
  • Strong, effective and friendly oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to cover reasonable distances per day in the field covering moderate to difficult terrain.
  • Remain calm in difficult situations, including:
    • Able to remember and apply policies and rules.
    • Work well with diverse groups of people.
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment at all times.
    • Have good situational awareness.
    • Know when to disengage.
  • Fluency in current Microsoft word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of recreation management, and how public involvement fits into the landscape.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be available to work a flexible work schedule, including evenings and most weekends.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must be able to pass Basic Enforcement Training during the probationary period, including a criminal background records check.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Must be able to pass UTV Operation and Trailer Towing Safety Training during the probationary period
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 
  • The majority (80%) of work is performed alone in isolated unimproved forested areas. Incumbent must be able to hike uneven and steep terrain in all weather conditions. The position will require operating a four-wheel drive vehicle on highway and forest roads, as well as trail hiking in moderate to difficult terrain.
  • Position requires a large majority (90%) of time in the field traveling alone between trailheads, trails, day-use areas, and work centers. Most travel will be in the region.
Desired Qualifications: 
  • Two years of professional or technical outdoor recreation-related experience focused on user education and outreach.
  • Familiarity with DNR recreation policy, rules, and regulations.
  • Two years of professional experience related to managing and/or working with volunteers.
  • Ability to operate, download, and record data from a trail camera, trail counter, and GPS phone application.
  • Experience as a limited or fully commissioned Warden or Law Enforcement Officer.
