The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity in the Forest Resources Division in Forest Informatics as an IT Data Management, Journey – Forest Data Systems Manager. DNR manages working forests on 2.1 million acres of state trust lands to provide quality habitat, clean water, and other public resources, as well as a stream of sustainable revenue to support public school construction and other trust beneficiaries. The maintenance of the balance between sustainable production of natural resource revenue, protection of public resources, and healthy natural habitats is a priority of the Division.

The talented and creative individuals within the Forest Informatics section support the sustainable management of DNR’s State Uplands programs by developing and delivering innovative technology and equipment, data and analyses.

We are looking for a candidate to fill the Forest Data Systems Manager role, designing and implementing database schemas, writing and maintaining backend processes for mobile data collection software, developing automated data compilation routines, and developing and deploying mobile data collection protocols and applications. These position duties support the information gathered by multiple groups in the Regions and Divisions, including Forest Inventory and Silviculture in Forest Resources, and Product Sales and Leasing.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
In this position, you will be responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining databases and tools to support custom built data collection applications, peripheral applications, and integration with other systems

  • Creates efficient, normalized relational database objects for timber sales, forest inventory and other corporate sectors.
  • Creates and manages user accounts for databases and assigns security levels to prevent unauthorized access and manipulation of corporate data.
  • Evaluates database connections and transactions for performance monitoring, security and troubleshooting.
  • Designs, creates and maintains GIS tools and database schema/processes to support custom built data collection application, peripheral applications and integration with other systems.
  • Scope projects and gather/document requirements.  Meet on a regular basis with clients to ensure all components of the systems meet business needs.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Forestry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, GIS, Geography, or related field with an emphasis on computation and quantitative skills. AND Four years of experience is required in the following and can be concurrent:
    • Demonstrable proficiency in the following computer languages: Python, R, JavaScript, SQL
    • Demonstrable proficiency in designing and implementing database schemas
    • Demonstrable proficiency with geospatial data
    • Experience with a wide range of data formats (e.g., relational databases, SDE Geodatabases, XML, JSON)
    • Experience with version control using Git
            OR combination of education and/or experience.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Work is conducted in an office setting and field setting. Field hazards include uneven terrain, obstacles including large down wood, steep slopes, deep brush, hot and cold temperatures.
  • Requires travel about 5-10% of the time for field visits and to attend meetings.
Desired Qualifications: 
  • Graduate degree in natural resources or a closely related field and at least two college-level courses in statistics.
  • Professional working knowledge of environmental sampling and data gathering, e.g. forest mensuration.
