WDFW is seeking an experienced natural resources scientist to bring their high level of expertise in fishery resource management to develop the most scientifically defensible hatchery operations for salmon and steelhead in the region.

With that in mind, 
You will perform natural resource research requiring ingenuity to prepare, assess, interpret, and set precedent for hatchery production.

For you to implement hatchery reform by preparing the analysis, assessment, and interpretation of the results of final reports, such as Hatchery and Genetic Management Plans (HGPM’s), or Chinook and non-Chinook Resource Management Plans (RMP’s).

The main focus of this role includes: 

Defining the research project and consulting with agency management to determine needs, goals and objectives: 

• Prepare and assess hatchery production information.
• Provide expertise and consultation to others on salmon and salmon hatchery research. 
• Consult and develop statements for Regional Fish Program Managers, Hatchery Operation Managers, and provide external coordination with Tribal, Federal and other entities.
• Communicate and advise management and stakeholders to identify and prioritize research reporting procedures with knowledge of salmon life history, hatchery operations, and biological requirements when assessing artificial production methods.
• Develop appropriate recommendations to comply with Federal Endangered Species Act (ESA), state law and other associated policies.
• Prepare written reports to communicate statistical and other findings on the analysis, assessment, and interpretation of the results and preparation of final reports including acceptance of ideas and actions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work Setting, including hazards:
  • Work is conducted primarily in an office or telework and at meetings, and some fieldwork (10%) maybe required to collect scientific data. 
  • Field work is often conducted in adverse weather or environmental conditions. 
  • Office hazards include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer, looking at computer monitor for long periods of time, sitting or standing for long periods of time. 
  • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. 
• Schedule:
  • Standard business hours are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the incumbent must be willing to work non-scheduled work week, especially for field work.  A flexible work schedule including telework will be considered at the incumbent’s request, subject to supervisory approval. 
• Travel Requirements:
  • Local or regional travel maybe required to meet with regional staff, attend committee meetings, evaluate properties, conduct general business, or attend or provide training.
• Tools and Equipment:
  • Requires the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer.) and operation of a motor vehicle.
• Customer Interactions:
  • Frequent, daily contact with clients, including some contact with those with concerns, and regular contact with partners from state, federal, tribal and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Please note:

• Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis. 
• A master’s degree will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
• A Ph.D. degree will substitute for all of the required experience, provided the field of major study was in the specific specialty (fish management or fish research, or habitat management or habitat research).

Licenses/Certifications:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• In depth knowledge of:
  1. Washington state fish hatchery systems
  2. Hatchery reform
  3. Federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) processes
  4. Fisheries research on salmonids
  5. Fisheries comanagement
• Certified Fisheries Professional through the American Fisheries Society (AFS).
• Two (2) peer reviewed journal articles with at least one (1) as primary author.
• An in depth understanding of WDFW fish hatchery operations, data and database management.
