COWLITZ TROUT HATCHERY

Anticipated Appointment Length: 7 months
 September 17, 2023 – April 15, 2023 

Provide sustainable recreational and commercial fishing opportunities in the state of Washington by supporting fish conservation at Cowlitz Trout Hatchery! Gain valuable hands-on hatchery experience by handling and feeding adult fish, cleaning ponds, and recording data.

Picture yourself, Engaging in maintenance duties around the hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment.

With your experience, Identify, sort, and sample species for spawning and adult distribution.

The optimal applicant, Prioritizes safety in day-to-day operations and will understand correct safety protocols, storage and handling for all hazardous chemicals.

Duties

Some of what our Fish Hatchery Technician will enjoy doing, 

Operation and maintenance of facility and equipment: 

  • Actively identify safety hazards and report concerns to agency personnel. 
  • Clean and pressure washes empty fish rearing vessels.
  • Operate forklift, tractor, yard maintenance equipment, and common power tools.
  • Service and maintain small gas engines and hatchery related equipment.
  • Wear and use employee safety equipment as directed including, inspecting, cleaning, and repairing equipment.

Fish Culture: 

  • Feed fish and weigh up according to the feeding schedule.
  • Remove egg and fish production mortalities and disinfect the equipment. 
  • Clean ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Perform fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants. 
  • Monitor rearing units for signs of predation and ensures rearing areas are secure. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Will work outside in all weather conditions – approximately 250 days out of the year. 
    • Will be required to repetitively lift or move at least 50 pounds including bags of fish feed and salt, raceways crowders, hoses, large debris.  
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. 
    • Work hours may vary depending on the work schedule and weather conditions. 
    • Standby may be required if deemed by management. While on standby, the schedule is 10 days on, following 4 days off.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel may be required to accomplish agency goals.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Hand and power tools, lawn care equipment, welding equipment, water sampling instruments, passenger vehicles, fish pumps, trash pumps, pressure washers and small gas engine, tractors, forklifts and utility terrain vehicle (UTV). 
  • Customer Interactions:
    • General interaction with the public.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Standby may be required for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic fish culture techniques and rearing procedures. 
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Excel software. 
  • Water dynamics such as flows, flow patterns, availability, and temperature.   
  • Calibration of specialized instruments such as scales, and Dissolved Oxygen meters. 
  • Basic math skills and calculate and understand quantities and proportions. 
  • Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
