Earthjustice’s Sustainable Food & Farming Program is accepting applications for one part-time scientific research intern for spring 2024. We will accept applications from graduate students who share a passion for justice and a healthy environment. This is a paid position. The successful candidate may work remotely or on a hybrid schedule from one of Earthjustice’s offices. Earthjustice is the premier nonprofit environmental law organization. The Sustainable Food and Farming Program works to improve our nation’s food system, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities, incentivizing climate-friendly practices, regulating pollution from industrial animal facilities, and ensuring safer farming practices for farmers, farmworkers, communities, and consumers. The intern will work closely with our team’s staff scientist, policy and communication experts, and lawyers to support litigation and policy through scientific and technical research on environmental, climate, health, and social aspects of the U.S. food system.   

Responsibilities: 

Under the supervision of a Staff Scientist, the intern will: 

  • Conduct research on a range of environmental issues related to the U.S. food system as determined by the needs of the team and student interest,  
  • Review federal and state agency reports, rulemakings and requests for comment,  
  • Synthesize scientific literature, perform spatial analyses, and develop data visualizations as needed, and 
  • Draft memos, technical summaries, sections of comments, and materials for educational and communication efforts. 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be enrolled in a graduate program during spring 2024. Programs that focus on environmental studies, environmental science, ecology, food systems, biology, biogeochemistry, animal studies or a related field are preferred.  
  • Must commit to 10-20 hours/week.  
  • Passion for social justice issues. 
  • Passion for the environment and a commitment to its protection. 
  • Awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations.  
  • Outstanding research, writing, and oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to conduct basic quantitative data analyses and/or geospatial analyses. 
  • Ability to present complex information in a manner that is both scientifically sound and compelling for various audiences. 
  • Ability to conduct scientific literature reviews. 
  • Proficient user of MS Office programs, including Excel and PowerPoint. 

Compensation:  

Internships at Earthjustice are paid. Graduate students will receive $25.45/hour, less applicable taxes.
