Project Title: Support for Community-Led Recreation and Conservation Projects Across Alaska 
Project Type: In-person, with some teleworking and project travel
Duration: 52 weeks (12 months). Preferred start by September 1st 2023
Location: Anchorage, Alaska
Housing: Must be secured by the fellow. A housing stipend of up to $700 per month will be provided.   

Project Background: Alaska RTCA support community-led recreation and conservation projects across Alaska, while also supporting some projects in Hawaii. Our current roster of active projects includes community trail master plans, planning and preliminary design for individual trails, the redevelopment of park sites, working closely with Alaska Native entities to help them tell their stories in a state game refuge, bike corridor planning, and assisting a Native Hawaiian Organization with the restoration of an 800yo fishpond. This position will provide support and participate in many of these projects and will also have the opportunity to take on a leadership role in one or more projects as the project manager. 

Project Duties: 

Project support (50%): Examples – assisting with facilitating work sessions, research and writing, producing maps, newsletters, and web content, document production, field mapping of resources and infrastructure. 

Project management, as an individualized developmental exercise (25%): Under the direction of the program manager and the rest of the team, the incumbent will develop project management skills and learn how to manage a multi-faceted, community-led recreation or conservation project. 

Administration, Training, and Development (25%): Duties will include maintaining our shared files systems, developing new skills through training and/or job shadowing, and other tasks as assigned. Fellows will work and communicate with a Hispanic Access Program Associate during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3-5 blog posts highlighting their experience and development. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with, or knowledge of, the principles of community and/or outdoor recreation planning
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, mapping tools such as GPS, ArcGIS, StoryMaps
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, document production and graphic design programs such as MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Mural, and other communication tools

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Age under 30 y.o. as of September 2022 (up to 35 for veterans)
  • A four-year undergraduate degree, ideally in a major/focus area related to planning, policy, geography, landscape architecture, resource management, or other related fields
  • If not meeting the desired qualifications, must possess a desire to learn those things
  • US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
  • Available to work full-time (40 hours per week)
  • Willing to travel within Alaska for project work, sometimes to remote areas, and to travel to Hawaii for project work

Working Conditions: The majority of the work will occur in an office setting. There will be time spent in the field. This field work could occur in remote parts of Alaska and in inclement weather.   

Stipend + Benefits:

  • A weekly stipend of $600 based on a 40-hour workweek ($15/hourly)
  • Monthly housing stipend up to $700 per month
  • Travel stipend up to $400 to defray cost of relocation travel to and from duty station
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Travel expenses paid to participate in an in-person gathering with your colleagues in the COR program (date tbd)
  • Funds available to support professional development opportunities that align with role and goals (training, conference, etc.)
  • Public Land Corp Eligibility – after completing 960 hours, PLC status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for certain federal positions.
