We are currently recruiting for Alternative Feeds Development Support to perform research support for fish feed and nutrition studies, fish and seaweed processing, and alternative feeds formulation is needed at Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) to further evaluate the potential of macroalgae feed ingredients to facilitate the replacement of fishmeal and fish oil in alternative fish feeds. This position will develop novel feed ingredients, execute meaningful feeding and nutrition studies that support program priorities and collect data from these studies suitable for publication in technical reports.

Do you have a strong background in the laboratory with emphasis on aquaculture specifically related to kelp? If so, this position may be for you. Work will be performed on-site at the NWFSC in Seattle, WA. This is a part-time position with 312 hours of anticipated work per contract year. The contract has a one-year base period beginning September 1, 2023 and will have up to four (4) 12-month option periods.

Duties:

  • Task One – Development of Macroalgae Protein Concentrates (all years)
    • The Contractor shall develop at least one high-protein (over 35%) feed ingredient from a domestically produced macroalgae each year.
    • The Contractor shall document processing methods employed in the production of the concentrates (monthly status updates required), and summarize findings in a report suitable for publication in the NOAA Technical Memorandum series or similar scientific publication by August 1 of the contract year.
  • Task Two -Kelp Protein Concentrates Feeding Studies (all years)
    • The Contractor shall formulate and produce at least five experimental sablefish feeds containing varying amounts of macroalgae protein concentrate each year for use in alternative feeds feeding studies.
    • The Contractor shall assist in annual alternative feed feeding studies to include feeding fish to apparent satiation, recording growth, and assaying final fish.
    • The Contractor shall summarize experimental data in appropriate tables and figures suitable for presentation at a World Aquaculture Society meeting. The Contractor shall summarize data by August 1 of each contract year and participate in the writing of publications for peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Oceanography with a minimum of 10 years of experience conducting fisheries research and a minimum of 2 years conducting aquaculture specific research. Demonstrated knowledge includes the preparation and award of grant proposals, successful execution of research studies, evaluation, and preparation of research results for publication in scientific publications, and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fisheries by-product processing, fish feed development, and fish feed and nutrition research to include the following.
    • Development of novel fish and seaweed ingredients for use in alternative feeds for marine fish.
    • Expertise in the operation of feed extrusion equipment, to include a CW Brabender Prep Center heated single screw extruder, to prepare alternative feeds for marine fish.
    • Successful execution of alternative feeds studies.
    • Knowledge of guidelines established by the National Research Council for the humane care of aquatic laboratory animals.
    • Presentation of research results from fish feeds and nutrition studies at a World Aquaculture Society conference.
  • Ability to confer with other scientists, engineers and researchers to analyze research, interpret analytical results, and write publishable technical reports. Demonstrated ability includes co-authorship on scientific and trade publications in subject areas beyond the contractor’s personal expertise.
