Thousands of students annually experience field trips to Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, an oasis of wildness wedged between Olympia and Tacoma in South Puget Sound. The mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System is to “administer a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management, and restoration of the fish, wildlife, and plant resources and their habitats for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), which manages the National Wildlife Refuge System, encourages the development of a stewardship ethic for public lands and their resources, and supports projects where people are engaging in nature related, outdoor activities. Our refuge was established by a grassroots citizen movement to aid in the protection and enhancement of the Nisqually River Delta. Each year, students, teachers, and parents participate in the refuge’s environmental education program. The member in this position will coordinate environmental education programming at Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge for groups of varying size and grade-level. This is an AmeriCorps National Service position. This position is contingent on funding and open until filled.

Member Duties: The Coordinator conducts activities directly with students during the indoor time at the refuge’s Environmental Education Center. They also explore refuge trails with student to provide information and conduct outdoor activities. The Coordinator recruits, trains, and coordinates environmental education program volunteers; plans and implements teacher workshops; will review and evaluate current education center activities and will adapt activities for different grade levels and state standards; assist in special events like the annual Nisqually Watershed Festival; and serve alongside watershed partners to provide specialized environmental education programming for under-served students in the Nisqually and Chehalis Watersheds.
