The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with our agency partner at Mount Rainier National Park, is recruiting one Visual Information Specialist. This position will assist with developing an online Accessibility Guide for trails and facilities, contribute to park social media, and assist with a variety of interpretive media projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

  •  Accessibility Guide:
    • Uses information gathered by the park High Efficiency Trail Assessment Process System (HETAP), which is used to determine slope, mileage, cross slope, obstacles etc., to populate the accessibility guide.
    • Attends HETAP training and assists in trail evaluations
    • Establishes a format in CMS for the guide and populates the information. 
    • Obtains or takes photographs of accessible facilities – parking spaces, picnic areas, campsites, trails, etc. and visitors for the guide. 
    • Works interdivisionally on the accessibility project, mainly with the park accessibility coordinator, Facilities, and Trails. Resources will likely also have some involvement. 
  • Social Media Team 
    • This position will be part of the park social media team. The position will mainly contribute to Facebook and Instagram.  
  • Other duties as assigned. 
    • These could range from helping install and remove seasonal exhibit components, updating publications, reviewing/proofing interpretive products, to assisting with event communications, among many other scenarios. 
    • Assists with updates of web and app content as needed.  
    • May assist with filming in various locations throughout the park. Training in basic videography will be provided. Other video tasks as needed. 
  • Training opportunities 
    • Participates in seasonal interpretive training (CMS, social media, videography, photography, Story Maps, access to Linked In Learning, etc.)
    •  May include a team field trip to a relevant location. 

Contract Timeline:

  • 4.5 month assignment
  • Anticipated Start Date: late May to early June
  • Full time (40 hours/week)

Location:

  • Mount Rainier National Park – located approximately two hours Southwest of Seattle, Washington.

Job Qualifications
Technical requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, communications, design, natural resources, or related coursework and  commensurate field experience;
  • Experience with a variety of communication tools to produce materials, including designing and producing written and visual materials;
  • Experience with graphic design and Adobe Suite, highly desirable;
  • Experience living or working in, and/or knowledge of the region’s ecosystems and natural/cultural resources,  desirable;
  • Motivated, self-starter who is detail oriented;
  • Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities;
  • Willingness to commit (pending performance and funding) to the full duration of the project, desired;\
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public in a variety of forums;
  • Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments; and
  • Possess valid, clean, state-issued driver’s license.

Additional requirements:

  • Motivated, self-starter, detail oriented, and possess good organizational skills;
  • Experience hiking in remote locations up to 5 miles per day.
  • Willingness to work independently or with and on interdisciplinary teams to support the mission of NPS and GBI, and accomplish targeted goals and objectives;
  • Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments and traverse uneven terrain
