MobilizeGreen seeks a conservation minded Archaeological Technician Resource Assistant (RA) Intern to serve 32 weeks in the Malheur National Forest, Emigrant Creek Ranger District. The Archaeological Technician RA will work on cultural resource inventory surveys and site recordation within the Emigrant Creek Ranger District. The RA will assist Heritage staff with surveys, site updates and identification, avoidance flagging, pre-project background research, database management, and ArcGIS spatial data entry. The RA will join the seasonal Heritage Archaeology field crew team. Post-field season work includes writing site records to SHPO standards, preparing inventory reports, and processing spatial data.

The RA may be required to travel and work in remote locations on the forest, independently and in teams. Fieldwork and administrative work in an office required. Driving on and navigating primitive forest roads and extensive hiking (up to 6 miles a day) may be required. Appropriate field gear and boots is required. Temperatures and sun exposure can be high during mid-summer, with inclement fall weather.

The Resource Assistants Program is designed for recent graduates and new professionals to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The RA will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. This is a developmental program.

Location
Eastern Oregon is a high desert, rural landscape. The community of Burns/Hines is approximately 5500 people with the remainder of the county population comprised of ranches and smaller towns. Outdoor recreation consists of hiking, four-wheel driving, hunting and fishing, and camping. The Strawberry Mountain Wilderness is north of the district and provides remote backpacking experiences. The Malheur National Refuge is south of town and offers hiking and seasonal bird watching. Burns/Hines is a full service community with multiple grocery stores, hospital, VA services, library, banks, and some resturants. The Burns Paiute reservation is within and adjacent to town.

Position Duties:

  •  Cultural resource inventory survey: perform pedestrian survey to the project design criteria following NHPA regulations. Transects will be performed in teams using compasses and tablets, and extensively documented in field notebooks. May be multiple miles of hiking in a day.
  • Site recordation: identify sites and artifacts leading to site recording. Resources include pre-and post-contact archaeological sites and historic properties. Will be standardized site forms using a Forest guide as reference. Tablets, AGOL Field Maps, digital cameras and graph paper will appropriately document sites.
  • Database entry: input data into FS Heritage Application database, as well as localized ArcGIS geodatabases. Date entry will include tracking progress on spreadsheets, entering site and project information into NRM, and updating project spreadsheets.
  • Generalized office admin tasks: includes scanning site records, updating photo logs, maintaining FS Pinyon folders and files, photocopying field site records and field notes. Tablets will be synced and updated, data pulled into ArcGIS, and organized into project folders. Good grasp of Microsoft Word and Excel is required; basic knowledge of ArcGIS is preferred but not required. Additional tasks are general support for Heritage staff, preparing for upcoming field work and projects, organizing field gear and the crew room, and maintaining the filing cabinet. 
  • Participate in District activities and trainings: engage with on-District events, projects, and monthly meetings. Assist with outreach efforts within the greater community. Complete mandatory trainings and professional development opportunities when applicable.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in Archaeology, or Anthropology, within 0-5 years out of school.
  • Direct experience conducting arduous field work and working as part of a team in a remote setting.
  • Successful completion of an archaeological field school through an accredited university.
  • Basic knowledge of ArcGIS (preferred, can be trained on the job)
  • Basic knowledge of cultural resource inventory survey strategies, and artifact identification (preferred, can be trained on the job)
  • Valid Driver’s License.
