Nisqually Reach Nature Center
The Nisqually Reach Nature Center is a non-profit that has focused on education and research for 40 years. We use environmental education and community science as tools for connecting people with nature, developing environmental awareness, and fostering environmental stewardship. Our educational programs are designed to make science and math approachable and fun using inquiry-based activities on the beach and in the classroom. Our research program is currently focused on bird and fish surveys. We also partner with other organizations on projects ranging from crab surveys to water quality monitoring. We offer meaningful opportunities for aspiring environmental professionals to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the environmental field and be involved in programs that inform natural resource management and teach children important skills and values. We are located right on the water right across from the wildlife refuge with a view of Mt. Rainier. There’s beach access and a boat launch.

At over 40 years and counting, we continue to foster understanding, respect, and care for the environment by connecting people with nature through education and research. Building community is also something we are passionate about; the Nisqually Reach Aquatic Reserve is a testament to our cooperation and dedication. We are now in our 10th year of citizen science projects.

Description
Nisqually Reach Nature Center is looking for an unpaid research intern to join our team. Are you looking to enter the field of conservation biology? Do you think you have what it takes to become a biologist? This is a meaningful opportunity for aspiring environmental professionals to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the environmental field and be involved in projects that influence natural resource management. This internship is expected to be hybrid and mostly office work (some in-person & mostly virtual) with some field work and lab work. 

Forage fish spawning surveys and pigeon guillemot surveys are the two main projects this position will support. The forage fish project involves conducting field surveys, analyzing samples using a microscope, and coordinating volunteers. Pigeon Guillemot surveys will be focused on fall/winter non-breeding surveys. The intern will assist with surveying, data entry, data analysis, and report writing. Other opportunities include filling in on other research projects (ocean acidification, larval crab) as well as interacting with visitors to the nature center, and assisting with education programs. 

Responsibilities

●    Assist with pigeon guillemot surveys; field research, logistics, volunteer coordination, data management.

●    Assist with forage fish spawning surveys; field work, sample processing, lab analysis.

●    Assist with preparation for, planning of, and conducting volunteer trainings.

●    Schedule and coordinate volunteers.

●    Enter, manage, and analyze community science data using Excel and GIS.

●    Give project updates at Nisqually Reach Aquatic Reserve Citizen Stewardship Committee Meetings.

●    Assist with other responsibilities as needed (helping with collaborative research projects, visitor center staffing, education programs).

Qualifications

●    Completion of basic studies in biological or environmental sciences. 

●    Basic experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

●    Field and lab experience.

●    Detail-oriented and organized.

●    Strong communication skills (written and oral).

●    Able to prioritize multiple tasks and be adaptable.

●    Able to work effectively with others as part of a small team.

●    Able to work independently with minimal supervision.

●    Dependable and disciplined with strong self-direction.

●    Reliable personal transportation.

●    Experience with GIS desired, but not required.

Schedule

●    20-40 hours per week/variable schedule; 10-25% field/lab work, 75-90% office work

●    Some evening (occasional meetings, special events) and weekend work
