Assist with the installation, maintenance, and the operation of juvenile rotary smolt traps!
Collect biological and outmigration data on Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed salmonids.
Picture yourself providing critical support in estimating the natural production of Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed salmonids in the rivers of southeastern Washington.
With your experience you will assist with the operation of rotary screw traps, and sample juvenile salmonids.

Duties
Assist in the operation of rotary screw traps:
- Lift traps with winches to safely remove obstructions and ensure that the rotary screw traps are running smoothly.
Sample juvenile salmonids to collect biological information:
- Enumerate (count) the fish by species, collect length, weight sample, and scale sample for age analysis.
Perform Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagging on salmonids:
- Safely insert PIT tags into selected species of fish with syringes.
Perform data entry:
- Enter collected data into computer database – verifying there are no errors.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- Majority of the work is performed in the field.
- Often handling five (5) gallon buckets of water and fish and lifting up to 50lbs.
- Potential safety hazards – slippery in or near rivers, loud noises, extreme weather conditions, and bites and stings from insects or snakes.
- Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
- Schedule:
- Working hours are variable and include night shift – weekends and holidays as needed.
- Travel Requirements:
- Travel to trapping sites will be required.
- Tools and Equipment:
- Smolt traps, Coded-Wire tags (CWT), Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags, scanning equipment, chain saws, come-alongs, and winches.
- Customer Interactions:
- Interaction with the public is limited.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
-OR-
- Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
License/Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience:
- Operating smolt traps.
- Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagging fish.
- Identifying juvenile salmonids.
