The Opportunity
WSDOT State Geotechnical Office is seeking a Transportation Engineer 4 to serve as the Assistant Field Exploration Manager (TE4) in Tumwater, WA. The State Geotechnical office is tasked with providing geotechnical recommendations Statewide in support of WSDOT’s capital construction program, preservation, and maintenance activities. This position will supervise the logistics and day-to-day operations of the Field Exploration Section. These drill crews perform Statewide field testing and sampling for geotechnical engineering purposes in support of WSDOT’s design, construction, maintenance, and emergency work projects of significant scope and complexity. In addition, this position supports overall scheduling and provides information for the tracking of crews and their charges against project budgets, proactively managing drilling costs. This position is also responsible to track training and certification of drill crew personnel.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Schedule the day-to-day operations of the drill crews and manage work production and schedule for the statewide drilling program.
  • Manage the purchasing and tracking of equipment tooling, and supplies. 
  • Track and maintain current inspections and certification for crane equipment. 
  • Maintain inventory of expendable drilling supplies and tooling.
  • Responsible for training drilling personnel and tracking both training needs and certifications. This Includes CEU’s for Ecology licensure, flagging, rail, crane, and other safety certifications.
  • Assist the Field Exploration Supervisors in troubleshooting or performing job setups, especially for more difficult, challenging, or largescale projects.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, one of the following are required:

  • One year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 3 or equivalent such as Bridge Engineer 3 or Transportation Planning Specialist 3 AND successful completion of the Entry Management Core Program (ED&TD, AA).

-OR-

  • Six (6) years of geotechnical field exploration experience to include a minimum of five years as a licensed geotechnical driller (Resource Protection Operators License) AND one (1) year of experience as a Field Exploration Supervisor.

In addition to the qualifications above, the following qualifications are also required:

  • A valid Department of Ecology Resource Protection Operators License.
  • A valid State Driver’s License in good standing and the ability to obtain a Washington state driver’s license.
  • Current OSHA HAZ WOPER Certification.
  • The ability to communicate policy, standards and technical Information effectively using verbal, written and visual communication skills.
  • The ability to facilitate large groups to explore end resolve Issues.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • A strong aptitude for multitasking and strategic prioritization.
  • The ability to travel overnight.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:

  • More advanced training in geology and soil and rock identification.
  • More advanced knowledge of Microsoft products such as Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe PDF.
  • Department of Ecology Resource Protection well construction license.
  • Washington State CDL (Class A) with (N) endorsement and w/o airbrake restriction.
  • 24- or 40- hour Hazardous Waste Training.
