Description
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, is recruiting for a Biometrician I/II to be based at the Interior and Eastern Arctic Alaska (Region III) Headquarters on College Road, adjacent to Creamer’s Field State Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The department is seeking an individual with an interest in wildlife management and conservation with vision to be part of an innovative and skilled biometrics team, and who aspires to solve scientific problems and address conservation issues. This position provides biometric assistance to mid and upper level wildlife biologists (Wildlife Biologist II, III, and IV) to support Wildlife Conservation staff and projects in the division’s Interior and Eastern Arctic region (DWC Region III). This position works closely with regional and area-based game management or research issues and offers a rare opportunity to provide biometric support to a diverse array of wildlife projects in beautiful and remote areas of Interior and Eastern Arctic Alaska. The wildlife species associated with these projects include muskox, caribou, Dall sheep, moose, bison, grizzly and black bear, wolf, as well as furbearers such as marten, beaver, river otter, red and arctic fox, wolverine and lynx. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to participate in wildlife field work with the richness of game species managed by Region III staff.

The working conditions you can expect: This position will be based at the Interior and Eastern Arctic Alaska (Region III) Headquarters on College Road, adjacent to Creamer’s Field State Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, in Fairbanks, Alaska. Individual office space will be provided. Daily work will primarily entail providing biometric assistance to mid and upper level wildlife biologists (Wildlife Biologist II, III, and IV), both in person and remotely.

Demonstrated knowledge of statistical theory and techniques of quantitative biology. Skills should include an understanding of experimental design; survey sampling; variance estimation; spatial and time series analysis; multivariate and nonparametric methods; generalized linear, linear mixed effects, and hierarchical models; population size estimation using mark-recapture, line transect distance sampling, and double sampling techniques; survival analysis; Bayesian approaches; circular statistics; movement analysis; resource selection analysis; and familiarity with the R software environment. Applicants need not be proficient at all skills.

Demonstrated ability to design and implement comprehensive programs to collect biological information, analyze data and interpret significance, and prepare accurate reports.

Demonstrated ability to present sampling protocols, biological data, and analytical results in a clear, understandable manner through internal memos, technical reports, or journal publications to both technically-oriented staff members and to lay audiences.

Demonstrated fundamental knowledge of biological models and the principles of population dynamics (e.g., population projection models, density dependence, growth curves).

Demonstrated ability to apply statistical techniques to wildlife research or management problems and, if necessary, to develop new statistical approaches.

Demonstrated familiarity with wildlife species common to Alaska and their basic life histories.

Minimum Qualifications
Biometrician 1 Minimum Qualifications (Range: 17)
A master’s degree from an accredited college in biometrics, statistics, or one of the biological sciences including or supplemented by 18 semester or 27 quarter hours of graduate level statistics and/or biometrics.
Special Note: Graduate level statistics and/or biometrics classes usually have course numbers of 500 or higher.
An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required master’s degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
Biometrician 2 Minimum Qualifications (Range: 19)
A master’s degree from an accredited college in biometrics, statistics, or one of the biological sciences including or supplemented by 18 semester or 27 quarter hours of graduate level statistics and/or biometrics.
-AND-
One year of experience practicing as a biometrician at the first working level. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to a Biometrician 1.
Substitution: Any combination of two years of additional qualifying graduate study and professional experience in a position where primary responsibility is statistical analysis and design related to fish or game resource management or research will substitute for the required one year of biometrics experience.
Special Note: Graduate level statistics and/or biometrics classes usually have course numbers of 500 or higher.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Biometrician 1 or Biometrician 2 level, depending on the applicant’s training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at level of Biometrician 1, promotion to level of Biometrician 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
