Position Description
Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge’s Environmental Education Program is looking for multiple interns for the spring of 2023. We host over 8,000 visiting students per year, with the spring being our busiest time of year. We are seeking an intern who is especially interested in supporting our education program by assisting with multiple components of our field trip programming.
The intern will have the opportunity to work with students both indoors and outdoors.
Typical duties include:
-Leading hands-on indoor lessons that use materials like bird wings, animal skulls, and microscopes
-Exploring wildlife and habitats of the refuge through direct observation with small groups of students
-Training students on proper use of scientific equipment, including binoculars
Additional opportunities could include scheduling/ coordinating, developing curricula, creating educational materials, or other work based on the interests of the intern.
Qualifications
We are seeking self-motivated workers who feel comfortable working independently and in a group. You should have a willingness to share your passion and enthusiasm for the natural world with groups of children. No previous experience is necessary, but a familiarity with local species is a plus.
Internship Duration
3/29/2023 – 6/15/2023
Approximately 20 hours per week, M-F based on schedule of visiting groups.
Internship dates and work schedule flexible based on candidate’s availability.
